For those of you who are still crying about the new law taking effect now and who think there is a chance to reverse it by challenging it in courts, how long is it going to take you before you suck it up?

There had to be a cut off point, whether you like it or not, whether you think it's fair or not, there just had to be a cut off point. Yes it may be unfair for those who already were PRs when the bill passed last year, but do you really expect a law to take effect 3-4 years after it passed?

You are the unlucky ones, that's true. You were hoping to apply in the next couple months but now it will take you additional year. Do you really think anyone is really going to listen to your frustration or sympathize with you? Most Canadians won't even understand why you are frustrated, for waiting another year? To them, if you are living in the country and have access to the exact same job market, social benefits, freedoms everyone enjoys, and most importantly you don't plan to get the passport and leave the next day, then why does it matter if you become a citizen today or in 10 years?

Whether you agree with me or not, you gotta understand something. You represent a very small portion of the population, anywhere between 200 and 250 thousands, probably 80% of which don't even care when they can apply, as long as they can still apply. The remaining 20% who care about when to apply represent at most 50 thousand of the 35 million population.

Do you still think anyone is going to listen to you?

Well, here you've thrown your two cents, do you feel better now ?

A law that harms thousands and discriminates millions should be revisited

Where is the harm and discrimination? To wait one more year? Laughable!

The definition of harm:
physical injury, especially that which is deliberately inflicted.
"it's fine as long as no one is inflicting harm on anyone else"
synonyms: injury, hurt, pain, trauma

This is common human nature, actually. When people get something, they want the thing they got become more and more valuable. Usually what few people have is more valuable...

I don't blame them though. It all depends on your position. After I get citizenship, I might change my position...

No surprise there.

For these new citizens the mentality is, "Close the door, but just let me in"

I wouldn't be surprised if people who complained about the new rules, will change their minds once they get citizenship.

This is no different from a study which showed that the political stance changes once they come across a lot of money. Once they have a good paying job or won the lottery, the chances of switching to conservative views from socialist views increases.

Definitely but not as good as I felt when they passed the law last year. I personally would love to see the minimum residency requirement 10 years at minimum, that's the only way to deter those who are here to collect passports and leave from applying to immigrate all together. Unfortunately that won't happen, they are too generous.

You're ignorant, plain and simple! Perhaps you enjoy your second class citizen status, or are too dumb to see what it does to you.
Time is NOT a laughing matter, perhaps to you since you do not understand it's value!
All immigrants, law abiding, have hinged their hopes, dreams, and opportunities in life based on TIME!
These same immigrants, current PR's, are tax paying, assimilated individuals who hold so much dear in this country.
For you to fail to digest such a simple thing, shows you have no idea what you're doing here.
Each immigrant here who has been present in Canada, working, paying taxes, are effectively paying the salaries of the same politicians, got that!? These same immigrants have EVERY right to object to an unjust law that hinders their progress in this country.
They have EARNED that right through TIME spent here already, amounting to many years.
All these people who are wining about why people are against this bill, against added time, and against no accountability for time spent in Canada, you all need to understand that immigrants are people, just like you, and have EVERY right to demand change in a bill that is unconstitutional, and unjust!

So waiting additional TIME is suffering for you? I can completely understand if you have a terminal illness that may prevent you from waiting an additional year or two to qualify.

All you have been whining about is one extra year. (up to two for those who want to claim pre-PR days).
What is it that is soooooo important that you got to have it right now? What has changed? You planning on taking off after you get citizenship? What is it? What's the difference of applying now as compared to next year.

And please don't give me crap about paying taxes. Can you provide me anywhere under the old and new rule that paying taxes or having a job give you right to citizenship.

Hi Mogli, thanks for talking to me in this manner. I do not know you from a bar of soap, I guess you are an immigrant like me. You know what they say about opinions? Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone got one.

So what is so precious about time? If you make Canada your home for good, why does time matter? As Screech said, do you have a terminal illness or you need to be somewhere in a hurry? I perfectly know what I do here, enjoy life. I may be dumb, I personally doubt it, but hey.. obviously I do not know a thing.

I personally could not care less whether it is 3, 4 or five years to qualify. Canada has been extremely good to me, I am not one biting the hand that feeds me. Go and protest, this is a democracy, there is freedom of speech and the right to express yourself. Probably something you did not have in your old country, you now feel the need to do so. I also pay my taxes like you, maybe more, maybe less, my turn will come and on that day I will be very grateful and proud. In the meantime I do my job in society, contribute and enjoy what this place has to offer.

You know what J F Kennedy said almost 55 years ago? "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country". Might be time for you think about that.

Have an awesome day!

I have noticed that neither Trudeau or Mulclair has made any announcements to change the citizenship laws yet. The only major announcements are getting rid of senate (NDP) and getting rid of past the post voting system (Liberal).

It goes to show that changing the citizenship law back to the way it was, is way way down on their "to-do" list, if it on the list at all. They know if they want it back, they will lose votes.

It's NOT in their to do list. You really think they are trying to win the votes of the effected 50 thousand PRs who can't even vote??? Or they are going to piss off Canadians who are actually happy the law passed?

I am a supporter of this new law change. Just saying that those who are hoping that the opposition party will change the rules back to the way it was, they will be giving themselves false hope on that.

I also like the new Law.
The new law has a lot of support.
It is much better compared to the old funny rules.
