I was just laid off from my tourism related employment. I am a PR. My partner is worried that "E" is social assistance. Does anyone have a link to official
information on this?

My employer provided ROE states shortage of work as reason for lay off. I assume I am applying for "E" and not "CER" ?

Many thanks..

"EI" is an insurance scheme that you actually pay into and under normal circumstances, only qualify for in specific situations. Welfare is entirely different. You likely aren't going to find any official link stating that EI isn't welfare because this is just something that is understood and known.

Hi All,

I am sponsoring my spouse for family class sponsorship. I have submitted application recently. Still waiting for AOR1 and sponsor approval.
I submitted my job letter at time of submitting the application. However, now due to Covid the business has temporarily closed and employer has laid off all workers so they may apply for employment insurance. They have given us Record of Employment and submitted it to Service Canada. I have two questions now:

1- Will it affect my application as a sponsor that I am no longer employed? Maybe the business opens again maybe not. Do I need to inform them about this change in employment status? If yes, how?

2- I do not qualify for employment insurance as I was a new joiner at work (and new to Canada too). If I apply for the emergency care benefit that will be announced in April for those who dont have jobs, will it count as social assistance and can it affect my application as a sponsor?

What about emergency care benefit? and what do we mean by taxable benefit please? Thank you.

There is no emergency care benefit. It is all CERB. Taxable means that you will pay tax on the money received.

Given that it is a taxable benefit offered in place of EI, no, it is not welfare.
Thank you,canuck.

One more question. My spouse sponsor me, so as the applicant, I also has no payment because the business has temporarily closed due to the Covid-19. Is the applicant eligible for CERB? ( I haven't submit the tax-return yet)

I know nothing about your spouse's working situation, so I can't say if they qualify or not.

question 1, I think it is unnecessary , if the person you are sponsoring is your spouse.
question 2, I called IRCC , it seems no people answering our calls these days.

Open work permit holder. The employer didn't lay off the employee, but the employer closed the business temporarily, every employee no pay now.

You need to go to the Canada website to look at the requirements and see if they qualify.

please does anyone know if receiving OESP (Ontario Energy Support program) - some credit applied to utility bill will be considered as welfare/social assistance? I am trying to sponsor by spouse but so worried about this.
