I was born in the United States, both my parents were American. I came to Canada as a very small child in 1966. I have landed immigrant papers from 1966.

I have lived in Canada all my life. Never really thought about my citizenship status over the years, but now to go to the U.S. it requires a passport.
I was told by my father when I was young that if I didn't vote in either country I would have dual citizenship. lol No idea if that is true. My father has since passed away.
My mother thinks that because I came to Canada in 1966 that 1966 Canadian immigration laws apply. I don't even know what that means, and I don't have any idea what 1966 Canadian immigration laws are anyways!!!

I want to travel to the U.S. but that now requires a passport. I have a copy of my landed immigrant status dated 1966 I do believe, and have applied to get a copy of my U.S. birth certificate.
I've lived in Canada since 1966 and never lived anywhere else.

How do I get a Canadian passport?
Should I be trying to be a "dual citizen" somehow? What IS a "dual citizenship"?
Should I apply for a U.S. passport? I have never lived in the U.S. since I was a small child, I don't really WANT a U.S. passport.

What should I do??!

Thanks!

1. You are a citizen of the US, so you can apply for a US passport. If you want to travel, you need a US passport. It would appear that you are a Permanent Resident of Canada.
2. If you want to have a Canadian passport, you have to apply for Canadian citizenship. The application is here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/adults.asp
3. No you don't lose your US citizenship if you become a Canadian citizen.
