I am a US citizen currently in Canada with my Canadian fiancee on a study permit that is valid until August 2012, but cost of tuition is very expensive for us as I am an international student. Also, I have children back in the U.S. That are near completing high school which has lead to a lot of traveling back in forth, so school for me puts a lot of constraints on me. We have been in an established common law relationship for 13 months and we want to start the process of applying for permanent residency, under common law sponsorship. I have done a ton of research on this and can't really find anything that has been helpful..So, I have a few questions...

1. Can I apply to switch my study permit to a visitors permit?

2. Can I apply for both the visitor permit and the permanent residency permit at the same time? And can they both be applied for Outland?

3. Can I stay in Canada while waiting approval for either one? And can the temp visitor visa be extended while still waiting PR approval ?

4. If I cannot change my temporary status, does that effect my study permit status?

I would really appreciate some insight into this... I've been racking my brains with this. I feel so at home in Canada and want to remain with my fiancee...we just want to make sure we are doing things the right way.

Thank you - Rebecca

I need to make a clarification...

On question (4).. I meant if I apply to change my status from study to visitor, and it is denied, will that change my status and no longer allow me to be here on my study permit?

Thank you
