Hi Puneet,

I understand from your post, that you are in receipt of the G2 licence.

You applied for the same with a International Driving Licence and letter from India right.

My question, is the Indian IDL and the 24 month driving expereince letter valid/sufficient to get a G2. If yes, how long does it take apply and receive a G2.

Explorer/Qorax/Rocky,Friends,

Need help. Am planning to buy a new car and obviously I have no credit history. Landed here on 1st Oct. Got my G2.
What are my options of getting a car loan for a new car- Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus or Mazda3...

Please help guys.

Thanks,
Puneet

Explorer/Rocky: Thanks for your replies guys. I have been researching old cars and any decent car that you look at is not less than 5k-6k, anything less than is usually a heap. I thought if I go in for a new car... I have shortlisted Kia Forte EX... it comes at an installment of around $270 pm (at 0 down if you can secure the credit) and it's a great time to buy a new car for the year end. Plus you do not spend a penny for the next 3-5 years on maintenance except for oil & lube change.
Also, the difference in insurance premium is not more than $60-$70.

Hi Matlal,
You'd need to get a DL verification letter along with original DL. After that you can give a G1 knowledge test followed by a g2 road test. I'd strongly suggest that you take driving lessons before attempting to appear for the road test if you do not have experience of driving in the US or Canada.
All the best!

Hey Canpuneet,
Thanks for the reply.

You will be required to pass knowledge test - G1 first, since you have more than 2 years of driving experience you can appear in G2 at any time, no waiting time. I suggest you to take couple of driving lessons before taking test of G2. Experince letter should be from the country which has issued you driving licence. They are going to see both experience letter and driving licence. You will not get G2 straight, would have to do full graduation.

Hi,

Thanks Explorer for the info. I tried online sample G1 test several times and its ok. Before G2 test, as you suggested we will take some coaching classes from Driving Schools etc. Hope lots of driving schools will be there to give classes to applicants like us.

Driving schools are all over Canada, see yellow pages or MTO website, they charge $ 25-30 per lesson ( about 1 hour)

Friends,
I bought my first car in Canada this weekend. Just wanted to share because after a lot of research, I have realized that this is perhaps the best time of the year to buy a new car... with the year end approaching and manufacturers and dealers pushing to get rid of 2010 models and meet year end sales targets. Cheers!

Puneet;

Congratulations, have a safe ride.

Thanx buddy. Your tips about shopping for insurance helped me a great deal. Thanks for that!
Just one thing though, most of the insurance companies (I tried about 7-8 of them)... do not give any value to driving training certificates... they might ask on the website if you have one, but they do not give you any discount. So my suggestion to all is, not to waste money on getting the certificate. Yes, if you want to attend the classes to learn about the traffic rules and safe driving, it is a good investment of time...

I have more than 10 years of driveing exp. and have my G1 in 2008 can i apply for G now??

You can apply for G. Make sure you bring along your Driver lIcense/experience verification from your licensing authority. You can read about the process on Qorax's posted topic... "All you need to know about landing"

All the best.

Hi all,
I am planning to buy a car within the next few days...i am having aproblem getting car insurance..... i have been driving in the US for almost 10 yrs but i left US and went back to india in june. hence i dont have car insurance since then....none of the auto insurance companies are ready to give me insurance within 24-48hrs...Allstate and State farm dont even want to write an insurance policy becoz i am not currently insured and i am new to the country....Bel Air direct and Desjardins want me to wait 15 days for a policy after I give them letters of experience from my US insurance companies and DMV driver records from all the states i was licensed in.

My driving record is very clean (except for one minor claim 5 yrs back and no tickets at all)...So i dont understand how new immigrants can get auto insurance fast..
Canpuneet, since you have bought a car recently, could you please share your experiences in getting car insurance???
Any other helpful comments will also be appreciated

That is strange. I had quotes from all insurance companies and finally signed up with State Farm. I had absolutely no driving record in Canada. Have you tried TD?
