Hi all,

I'm 28 and have a British passport, and have registered for a 1 year working holiday visa under the BUNAC scheme. I'm part-way through the process now although am already concerned about the costs and some of the bureaucracy. For example they require me to have a return flight to the UK booked for within a year's time, before they will release the visa to me; whereas I would like to have the visa basically ready for me, so I can apply for work and then fly to the best destination depending on the job. I'm also wondering about my chances of finding a good professional job on this time-limited visa.

I'm wondering whether I could be in a better to apply under the Skilled Workers Scheme as I registered with 71 points under this, even though I don't have an employment offer there.
I think with BUNAC it would prevent me from making any long-term plans, because the visa is only for 1 year.

If I did find an employer willing to immigrate me as a PR within that 1 year, would I be required to leave Canada? Or could I do the process from within Canada?
Or if I go on the BUNAC scheme but just apply myself as a skilled worker, could I receive skilled worker status within that time?

How long roughly do Skilled Worker determinations take?
And how is it possible to get a Skilled Workers visa but still not have an offer of employment?
The skilled workers application also seems much cheaper which also doesn't really make sense to me.

I was guessing that it may still be worthwhile to go under BUNAC and then start the process of applying under the Skilled Workers Scheme, but that's just a hunch and I can't find much to back it up.

I'm just trying to weigh up the pros and cons. If you have any information I would be really grateful!!

Thanks,

If you have job experience off the most wanted list, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who-instructions.asp#list you can apply as an FSW right away under Category 1. Otherwise, when you are in Canada, if you get an employer to give you an AEO, you could apply under Category 2. If that doesn't work out, at the end of your year on Bunac, you could apply under Category 3. With the last option, unless you could get an LMO and change over to a regular work permit, you would have to go back home. With the other two, you definitely have a chance of getting your permanent residency before your BUNAC visa is up. They are aiming at 6-12 months processing time but working under new rules so nobody knows for sure.

One proviso or maybe 2, it is unlikely that on a BUNAC that the OP would get a years work experience, as the visa is only valid for a year, and I doubt that the work work start on day1 .

My mistake, I don't - I'm in the AOC category A but it's not on that list :(

Thanks very much for the help :)

Also my friend was asking whether I could go to Canada on a holiday visa and then just wait for the BUNAC authorisation to arrive (then start working). Or would I need to have it when I actually enter Canada?

Thanks :)

You should ask the BUNAC people what they want you to do.
