It really depends on what line of work you do. Thing is "open work permits" is not something given out freely by cic unless its a certain class of employment. Also. being nominated only guarantees the "Principal" applicant a 2 year work permit and not his/her dependents. Only the pr part allows your dependent to apply with you. Cheers!! (Hope this helps)

thanks for the insight mutt391,im working in a hotel in bc.and got nominated for bc pnp. i know im on a semi skilled category in N.O.C
what happened is my friend and i together with his wife got nominated.and she was the only one approved by the cic to have an open work permit.im not sure why? :) can you enlighten me about this situation?appreciate it.

What line of work does your friend's wife do? I'm assuming its something care aid/caregiver related correct? Usually care aids get open work permits due to the fact that they don't have a permanent employer hope that helped :) . Just F.y.i I'm also in the hotel field..Congrats on finding an employer in Canada!! Cheers!!

You can get a work permit tied to the employer that sponsored you for the PNP. Your spouse can get an Open Work Permit.

Depending on your status in Canada, you can drive over the border to Seattle and get it done at the Embassy there, takes a day.

@mutt391: my friend's wife is also working as a hotel attendant, the same with us.

@angelbrat: I'm on a temporary working visa and got nominated by BC PNP. Aside from going to Seattle, to the Embassy there, is there any other way around this? What are the necessary documents that my wife should provide in order to apply for the spousal visa/open work permit?

Where can i find links for the application forms for spousal visa? And lastly, my documents were returned to me by CIC due to insufficient information that needs to be flled in, i just want to know, if it will take another 3 mos. for me to get the result of my application?

follow the link below to the Canadian Work Permit Self-Assessment Tool:

https://services3.cic.gc.ca/wizapps/?id=workpermit&lang=en

it can determine if your wife is eligible for an open work permit. she can even apply online but might take longer than if you went to Seattle.
