Indonesia does accept Canadian refugee travel documents—but not with a visa‑on‑arrival. Instead, you’ll need a pre-arranged C1 (211A) Tourist Visa, sponsored in advance. Here's what that means:

Travelling with a Canadian RTD to Indonesia​

• You can travel, but only with a pre-issued C1 (211A) Tourist Visa, which must be arranged before departure via an Indonesian visa agency or diplomatic mission.
• This visa is not available on arrival—travelers on RTDs are not eligible for VOA and will be refused boarding without this visa stamp in the document .
• Requirements include:
  
  • RTD valid for at least 12 months.
  • A sponsor or guarantor in Indonesia to support the visa application .
  • Standard supporting documents (photos, tickets, proof of funds, etc.).

• Visa Details​

  • Single-entry, valid for 60 days (some agencies offer extensions, but not always)
  • You must enter within 90 days of visa issuance .
  • Some nationalities are completely barred from this visa category (e.g., Afghanistan, Israel, Nigeria, etc.) 
  • Since you're using a Canadian RTD (not Afghani/Israeli/etc.), this doesn’t apply to you.

I wish to travel to Bali Indonesia and Vietnam, but I'm unsure if they would issue a visa on RTD. I'm an Afghan national.

you can travel to Indonesia but visa process is bit different and you cant travel to Vietnam

Indonesia won't honour RTD's. Not sure about Vietnam.

Indonesia accept RTD and they have beautiful smooth immigration process for RTD holders, no issue at all. I have been in Jakarta and Bali I spent new year 2026 in Bali, you must apply online visa and choose refugee travel document option in 2 weeks visit visa will be issue.

Could you please share your experience? I’ve chatted with them. On their immigration website. They said that;

We would like to inform you that refugee travel document holders for tourism purposes could apply for a C1 visa and require an Indonesian citizen as guarantor to apply. Kindly remind the visa must be applied from the guarantor account or Indonesia citizen account.

With a C1 visa, you can​

• Visiting Indonesia for tourism, personal development, or to learn about unique tourist attractions, as well as taking cruise ship trips. You can also attend as a participant in meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions, and engage in discussions, negotiations, and/or the signing of business agreements at offices, factories, or goods production sites. You are also permitted to conduct field visits to offices, factories, goods production sites, places for investment, and/or mining sites; as well as engage in medical-related activities.

  • a travel document that is still valid for at least 6 months before it expires,

• • Foreigners without citizenship or foreigners holding travel documents (not national passports) in the form of temporary passports, emergency passports, titre du voyage, certificate of identity, laissez passer, or other equivalent documents must attach a Re-Entry Permit document to the country where the visa is applied from and a return ticket/onward ticket to another country.
  • The visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. If it is not used after that period, foreigners must apply for a new visa to enter Indonesia.
  • Please note that the visa validity period differs from the period of stay, so kindly check your visa for information on the length of stay.
  • Foreigners with a stay permit from a C1 visa are not allowed to sell goods or services or receive salary, wages, or compensation for their work/business from individuals or corporations in Indonesia.

  8. issuing and delivering your visa.
