in Lebanon with mountain driving AWD saved me from skidding a couple of times under the rain. I think a car that runs both 2WD and 4WD has the best of both worlds, economy when you need it and good traction when it rains or snows.

Many people do not have AWD vehicles, it really depends on where you intend to live.

In southern Ontario (certainly not the distant north) during the snowy winter, many people just remove their standard tires and replace them with winter tires.
In Quebec I believe this is required by law.

Unless you are a forest ranger, a good set of snow tires will be fine. Nevertheless, snow tires or 4WD, you still have to slow down in the winter and drive with caution. Even 4WD vehicles are useless if the snow is too high. Watch intersections, snow and ice tend to accumulate there. This is especially true in rural areas. You could be flying down a relatively clear road and come to an intersection that is covered in snow and ice.
