Awaiting work permit - in Canada on a Student Visa till end of January

Hi, I am currently in Canada with a student visa till the end of January. I have found an employer who is sponsoring me. They have a positive LMIA and I used it to apply for a work permit. I'm not sure if I will receive an answer to my work permit application before my student visa is up. What should I do in the meantime? Should I change my student visa to a visitor visa? Does Implied Status work for people waiting for a work permit who are in Canada under a student visa? If yes, do I have to apply for implied status? Thank you for your help.
