Automatic revalidation with a different visa type

Hi, my close friend is working in USA on H1. He has never left USA after he moved to H1, so he has never been to H1 visa stamping. The last visa stamp he has in his passport is F1 which expired in 2014. Now if he visits Canada, will he be able to re-enter USA with AVR with a valid I-94 for the h1 without a h1 stamp in passport?

If you're sent to secondary because of an expired visa, those Officers damn well sure know about it. It's not common, but not extremely rare either.

It is common for being sent while travelling on expired visa as many border guys cannot process them(or possibly they dont know/want to process them). I have been inside manytimes(weekly at least 1-3 times) while i did not have valid visa. I dont think that its uncommon.
