Hi forum. The assessment of sponsor (that is me) was completed and now the case has moved to "assessment of person being sponsored" which takes 16 months from where I am. Am I allowed to visit my spouse during this time or I cannot leave Canada? If yes, for how long? This is something that has never been clear to me.

Yes you can leave Canada but only for a short period.. Like a week or too.. Long periods may affect your application..

Thanks for the reply! Is there any documentation on this? I just wanted to read up the official stance on this if there is any..

You're welcome.. Not really. I had the same question cause my wife is coming to visit me next month.. The only thing closest thing I saw was on the first email CIC sends states when to contact them and it doesn't mentions leaving the country to visit your spouse.. So I guess it's ok lol

Are you a Canadian citizen, or only a PR? If you are a citizen you can visit her for as long as you like. Only a PR that is sponsoring their spouse or partner must `remain' in Canada (except for short trips) during the processing.

I am a PR. I asked this because I am getting conflicting answers from different people I talk with.. some say it doesn't matter after the sponsor assessment, some say it does. This is worsened by the fact that I can't find any official documentation about this from CIC.

I guess I will play it safe and take a short trip.

It does matter. I took a quick look on CIC's website but couldn't find the proof that you're looking for. Maybe someone else (with more free time) can locate it for you.

Found it:
