It's actually not necessary to get the passport while in Canada (there is no passport control when departing Canada) - although it might be a lot easier than abroad, depending on circumstances.

The important thing to keep in mind is that a Canadian citizen will need a Canadian passport to board flights to Canada in the future.
Yep, you can find instructions for applying for a Canadian passport abroad here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...ssports-abroad/new-adult-passport-abroad.html - from what I understand it's 20 business days + mailing time (when you apply from abroad, they print the passports in Canada and mail them). So a bit more certain than, for example, applying for a PRTD.

The main thing is that you may want to sort out the guarantor and two references out before you leave, so you have all of that ready when you apply from abroad.

If for some reason, applying from abroad for a Canadian passport doesn't work out with your situation, but you are able to fly into the US, then you can also try to re-enter Canada from the land border. (In theory it might also work with Saint Pierre and Miquelon but I haven't seen any reports of anyone having ever attempted this.)

This is a very good point. Not that guarantors/references have to be in Canada or Canadian (suggestion: read the instructions carefully!), but anyone in this situation would be well advised to at least plan in advance how to get the required [everything] for the passport application. It'd be a bummer to realise once abroad something wasn't in order and/or missing.

Yes. I really don't want to get into details of the (few) exceptions to needing a Canadian passport to board a flight to Canada: it gets into the weeds unnecessarily and not to encourage anyone, i.e. plan ahead and get your Canadian passport!

Apart from that and US passport holders, those Canadian citizens holding passports eligible for visa waivers (eg EU citizens) can apply for an electronic authorisation (but NOT the ETA, you'll be refused), but this is basically meant for emergencies (only for flights booked within x number of days.

St Pierre and Miquelon: I really don't encourage anyone to experiment with this, the requirements get quite specific for SP&M. For example, Schengen visas are not valid (must apply for a separate visa), and I am guessing there's a likelihood anyone without a return ticket might not be allowed to board, etc. It might work for some EU citizens - but again, it might not. Just apply for the passport.
