Hi guys,

So my wife's application just got approved. On the email they gave us, they said to mail in our passport if you are from a country that requires visa for entry. The question is, she already has a valid visitors visa, does she still need to mail in her passport for another visa?

Your wife has to do landing.. irrespective of if she is in Canada or outside Canada. When you send her passport for immigrant visa stamp, they will send you back the passport and a document which is also called COPR or Landing document. She has to leave the country and re enter to change her status. You can also do that by walking across the bridge at Niagara (if you are in ontario). This process is called flag polling. Google it, you will get more info on it... So to answer your question.. YES she has to send her passport in for stamping. if she is in Canada already, i would contact CIC to ask where to send her passport.

Could you explain what the purpose of sending in her passport is if she already has a visa?

Our plan is to send the documents they requested (not her passport), and I am sure they will send us back a package (perhaps the landing document). Then she will fly into canada, and complete the immigration process?

Will the above work?

A visitor visa and a PR visa are two different things.

A friend of mine sponsored his mother-in-law for PR, while she was already in Canada on a visitor visa. They had to get the PR Visa, and the COPR, and leave Canada and come back in order for her to be registered as a permanent resident.

No, it won't. They will not issue her a COPR until she sends in her passport.

As already mentioned in your other thread, you will require an immigrant visa. A visitor visa is not an immigrant visa. Therefore you will be required to send your passport in to get the visa. If you do not, then you cannot get the COPR and cannot land.

If they ask for the passport, you should send the passport. Your wife needs a visa to enter Canada. The fact she has one type of visa already does not negate the fact she needs a visa to enter, and so falls into the definition of who needs to send their passport in.
