Applying from Japan - Passports

I'm applying to sponsor my wife (we live in Tokyo and will be moving back to Canada in 2015).

According to the checklist specifications for Japan, copies of passports must be submitted and expiry dates of passports for applicants/dependents must be valid for at least 18 months from the date of submission.

Both my wife and my daughter's passports expire in just under a year. Will they really both required to renew their Japanese passports a year before they expire?

I applied from Japan too. You need to renew the passports. And, you need to get official documents translated by a certified translator. Also, although I have found Japanese commissioners of oaths and notaries many were unwilling to notarise/witness my documents - they referred me to the Canadian embassy. The embassy offers notary services on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Good luck!
