Hi all,

I am applying visa for a temporary work pemit, for a medical fellowship with LMIA exemption. I will be bringing my husband and kids. However, I have just found out that I am pregnant. Can I proceed with applying for visa for the rest first, and do the visa for the baby later? Or do I need to wait until the baby is born to apply for the visa for the whole family?

You will need a medical with chest xray then you may want to wait for birth (safety of your unborn child), and then all apply. You are the principal applicant so application will be on hold for all. So inform employer, wait for birth and then apply after.

Yes, you can generally proceed with the applications for yourself, your husband and your existing children now. You do not normally need to wait until the baby is born before applying. IRCC requires each family member to have their own temporary residence application, but family applications can be submitted together or separately.

Once the baby is born, you would need to update IRCC and submit the baby’s own application with the required documents, such as the birth certificate and passport. Dependent children applying to work, study or visit Canada need their own status/document.

One thing to keep in mind is the medical exam. Since you’re applying for a medical fellowship, an immigration medical exam is likely relevant. Pregnancy does not prevent you from doing the IME, but IRCC allows the chest X-ray portion to be deferred until after delivery if you choose, which can delay final processing until the medical is completed.

So practically, I wouldn’t delay the whole family’s applications solely because of the pregnancy. Apply with your current family composition, disclose the pregnancy where relevant, and update IRCC promptly after the baby is born.

Would also suggest informing your potential employer if you will have to adjust your start date since most fellowships start in July.
