Applying Citizenship with expire Passport

I am going to apply citizenship for my family, my son's home country passport expired in Feb 2017. Do I need to renew it before apply? do they require valid passport?

my son's passport is also expired..and i didnt renew it... just write the explanation attached with application.. about why you dont renew it or why you have gap between the passports.. hope it helps..
