I am Canadian and my boyfriend is American we have been together over a year and he is thinking about moving to Canada with me and we are wanting to start the process for Permanent Residency as this seems like the best option for us vs. a work visa or specific permit. We are both in late 20's and want to start working towards security together.

Any thoughts???

We need input on this but want to avoid a lawyer right now for the process we are wanting to finalize as soon as possible but can't find a firm answer on cost and timelines.

Thank you all in advance!

The fastest option would be for you to sponsor him through family class. In order to do so, you must either be married or common law (common law means you have lived together for at least one full year and can prove it).

Cost will be around $1,500 once you factor in immigration fees, medical and police reports.

Assuming you use the outland/outside of Canada application process (which you should), you're probably looking at around 10 months processing time maybe less.

Unless your boyfriend has an occupation that qualifies under NAFTA, work permits tend to be extremely difficult to get due to the hoops an employer has to jump through to hire a foreign worker.
