My wife is in Canada on a work permit, well expired. But she will definitely qualify for new ETA that Thai's are now allowed to apply for.(Her Mom got it)

But my wife is currently in Canada, where as her Mom was outside the country when she applied. Will that matter?

Thanks

What is her status in Canada? Does she meet the requirements as listed because if she had a work permit then she doesn’t meet the second bullet.

Who can apply
You are eligible to apply for an eTA if you meet 3 requirements:

  • you’ve held a Canadian visitor visa (temporary resident visa) in the past 10 years or currently hold a valid United States nonimmigrant visa
  • you’re coming to Canada for a short visit, business or tourist activity (normally for stays of up to 6 months)
  • you’re flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport using a valid passport from one of the eligible visa-required countries
If you do not meet all of the requirements, you need a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) to travel to Canada.

Ahhh didn't realize that 2nd bullet, so she might still need a visitor visa because her WP will be longer than 6 months

Looks like she may be issued an ETA with her new work permit under the new visa exempt rules for Thais
But the issue is that she is already in Canada
I guess we will see

Flying to Canada to work or study for more than 6 months. You need to apply for a work or study permit. When your permit is approved, you will be given a temporary resident visa, which will allow you to board your flight to Canada.
Flying back to Canada to work or study after renewing your work or study permit. You can continue to use your visa if it’s still valid. If your visa expired, you will be given an eTA when renewing your permit. You must apply for a new visa if you travel to Canada by car, bus, train or boat.

But she is in Canada so not eligible. Once she has a work permit, she can apply for a TRV inland. Not sure why she cares if she has ETA or TRV.
