If you plan to travel outside the Canada,I suggest you apply 120 days before the expiration of your study permit,if you're applying for a study extension and plan on travelling outside Canada.
I made the mistake of booking a flight 90 days before my study permit expired, thinking that it would arrive in time, for me to also apply for my TRV(Multiple re-entry visa) which you need to have stamped in your passport before you leave the country.
My study permit extension hasn't arrived yet and you can only apply for TRV if you have a valid study permit. So,based on how long it's taking to process my study permit (been 60 days now) and how long it is to process a TRV, likely have to cancel my trip which falls at the end of the month.
