Hello everyone,

Thanks in advance.

I moved to Canada this year with U.S. citizen children. Applied for their PR. Are they qualified to get a health card already or do they have to wait until their PR is approved?

Hello everyone,

You have to wait until PR is approved. You can technically wait until AIP (approval in principle) which is just before approval. You will need to prove that you have AIP at the larger service Ontario offices since most employees are unfamiliar with the rule. Most wait until they get PR since it’s a lot of work for not a lot of extra time fir most files. You should take out private insurance to cover emergencies and routine visits and vaccinations will be out of pocket. If you’re coming from the US the costs will seem very reasonable. Lower than some people’s co-pays would have been. Make sure to ask a doctor whether they take private pay patients since some don’t. Most seem to go to walk-in clinics if they need to see a doctor when they don’t have OHIP.
