Application Process

Because I've got information overload right now I just need some help in understanding the best option for my husband and I. Married since 11/26/2011 his work visa expired 12/15/2011. The funds are available now for us to begin the process. We are working with a social working that explained we need to send in the police check (from JA and from Canada for hubby) along with the medical, and all other forms pretaining to us. Is this correct? we should send in everything all at once right?? Husband is from Jamaica so I'm worried the police check from JA will take a while, the social working we are working with said if we send the request directly to the Superindentant of Police in Kingston, JA it will ensure the request gets handled quickier. I just want to start the process and not waste anymore time so we can move on with life but I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything so any advise any encouragement would be greatly appreciated we are both feeling really stressed over the process as its so brand new to the both of us and I'm worried that I'm missing something in the information overload I'm experiencing this morning lol

Just to add we are in Toronto, and we were given a fingerprinting place to go to that charges $150...is that not a little steep? are is the norm? Sorry one more question is it necessary for my husband to get a police check in Canada as well? or just Jamaica?

Hi,

As your husband has lived in Canada on a previous working visa he should not need to get a police check for Canada. I had been living in Canada for almost two years prior to getting married and when we submitted our application I only needed to submit police checks for my home country - Ireland - and the UK as I had lived there for over 6 months.

I believe the view is that a Canadian police check is not needed as it would be easy for immigration to look up the information if they needed to.

Yes, the application process can lead to information overload, but if you go online and download the necessary forms and handbooks and take your time to read through them it should all make sense.

Only in certain cases. The Canadian visa office will tell you if you need a Canadian criminal record check while your application is being processed.

Just try not to get stressed out by the whole process, I know that it can be a bit overwhelming but it will be worth it in the end. My wife and I spent close the a month and a half preparing our application as we wanted to make sure we had everything we needed. We may have went a bit overboard though, our application was as thick as a phone book by the end of it!!!
