Any clues on how to get SIN(social insurance number) at landing interview?

I think you have to take your ID and COPR to the Services Canada office and apply. It's not supposed to take too long, and you get the number right away, and the card in the mail a bit later.

i would love to get it right away but i went to check on the service canada website and it gives me a different address(not the same as landing interview appointment) and apparently the offices close at 4 p.m. my landing interview is at 2 p.m. and we live 650 km from quebec city (where the interview will be held) . so i don't know if next day i will be able to go to the service canada office....
do you know if i can apply by mail in case the office will be closed to go in person? thanks a lot!

You can apply by mail but it will take much longer. You can go to any service canada centre that is close to you, you don't necessarily have to go to the one in Quebec City....

There should be one much closer to you than 650 kms....

We went today and for some stupid reason we were a "difficult" case for applying...it would not validate the document (COPR)..so now we wait..

Maybe someone else can comment, everyone I know of did theirs in person. Got it done at their local Services Canada office, same day as landing or within a few days after (outland applicants). Is there no other Services Canada office closer to home where you can do it after you come back from the landing appointment? It's not mandatory that you apply for it the same day as landing, I'm sure a one-day delay won't negatively affect it.

Congratulations on your landing interview Inladappl!!!

Let me just point out that there is a difference in documents needed for inland and outland applications. Since you applied inland, you cannot get a permanent SIN until after your receive your PR card. There are a few landing offices (local CIC office) who will have Service Canada representatives available at your landing day to help you out with SIN but not all. If that is the case you are out of luck, you have to wait for your PR card. For outland applicants they can just show their COPR and visa stamp foil attached to their passport, I know it sucks for inland applicants.

Have you applied for an Open Work Permit? If you received your OWP, you can get a temporary SIN in the meantime so you can work then just apply for a permanent one later on. If you decide to get the temporary SIN please do this before your landing interview because your local CIC office will ask you to surrender your OWP on your landing date.

Review your landing letter, they normally inform you in that letter if a service canada rep will be available to help you with SIN on the same date.

Hi,

Can you let us know what finally happened ?
Were you able to get your SIN immediately or did you have to wait for the PR card ?

I am an inland applicant. I have been working on a "closed" work permit which only allows me to work for my current company. My landing interview will be on November 22. Can I start working for another employer with the COPR and my current SIN number ? or do I have to wait for the new SIN ?
