Hi all,

I am an American that lives and word in Canada on a work visa that doesn’t expire until 2019. My spousal sponsorship papers just came through, and I drove to Niagara border to apply for the actual card. They told me at the end of the process I cannot re-enter the country without my PR card or a visa. I have a very expensive trip booked to Hawaii with my wife in two weeks time. What is the process to get the visa, and how long does it take?

Thansk all

Hi, I thought I would add that I have a NEXUS card, and I am an American born citizen. Feeling very stressed about this... not quite sure how this will all work out :( :(

Once you landed as a PR, your previous visas were voided because as a PR they are no longer necessary. PRs have the same rights as citizens when it comes to where you want to live and work.

PR cards are currently processing at about 61 days from the date you landed.

I'm fairly confident that....
You can travel on your American passport. Just DON'T mention to the airline about your PR status. Once at the CBSA point of entry in the airport, you'll declare to the officer that you are a PR. They will be able to confirm that based on cross referencing your passport. Some people take their COPR landing papers with them just in case but that generally isn't necessary.
I'll let a senior forum member confirm though.

You will be able to travel on your American passport. As Jordo noted, do not tell the airline you are a PR, simply board the plane as a 'visitor'. When at the airport get in the line for residents and CBSA will let you back in. It might take a few extra minutes while they verify your status, but you'll be fine.
