My boyfriend just asked me to marry him, he's a Canadian citizen and I am an American. I am in the process of getting my work permit in Canada because I would one day like to become a citizen.
What paper work do we need if we get married, other than the license?
Does it matter what country we get married in?
Will getting married help the sponsorship?
Any information will really help! Thank you.

Exactly what type of work permit are you trying to get? Do you mean a closed work permit with a company willing to hire you through the LMO process?

It doesn't matter where you get married, as long as its a legal marriage according to the jurisdiction you're in.
Specific requirements vary by province or state, but in most cases just some ID, a license if required, and an affidavit that you are both single if required.

Being married or officially common-law (living together 12 consecutive months) is a mandatory requirement to even begin the sponsorship process. If you apply outland as a US citizen, a straightforward application can usually be fully completed in around 10 months time.

You need to get a medical and police checks done. In the majority of cases no interview is required for US citizens.
