Allowed to leave form in 2016 - applying for visit visa now

Hello,

I live in the USA on a temporary visa. I took a Canada Air Flight Ticket 3 years back to go from USA to India via Canada. I was allowed to board the flight in the US. When I got down in Canada, I was told that I needed a Canadian Visa.I was not aware that I needed a transit visa until then. I was given a "Allowed to Leave Canada" form and I continued with my trip to India. Now I am applying for a visit visa to Canada and I see a question something like below. Have any of you faced such a situation before ? Any experts can you Can you please suggest what I should do ? :

Have you every been refused a visa or permit, denied entry or ordered to leave Canada or any other country or territory ?

You need to answer yes of course and then provide the details of what happened in 2016. It's critical you answer truthfully to this question. Failure to do so will result in a refusal and 5 year ban from Canada for misrepresentation.
