How to obtain Ontario Driving License
with our Home Country's D/License

Dear all,

Let me address another query which getting repetitive here. The procedure of obtaining a Canadian driving license is pretty much simple within our 1st few days [max a week]. Remember, this is 'easy' if we are coming from countries which has a similar driving & road management conditions [read 'left-hand drive']. If not, we may have to undertake some training before we apply.
...
Pre-conditions / Which License:
1. If we have over 24 months 'overseas' driving experience -we get the Ontario G2 Driving License.
2. If we have over 12 months [but less than 24] driving experience -we get the Ontario G1 Driving License.
(Details below)

Direct Swap of Licenses:
If our home country doesn't have a *reciprocal licence exchange agreement with Ontario, we cannot Swap our current D/License to get a Toronto-ON D/License.
*Reciprocal License Exchange Agreement exists between Ontario and: US, Japan, Korea, Switzerland, Germany, France, UK, Austria & Belgium.

What is the Procedure then:
But, in that case do we have to START all over Again? No... We can immediately apply & get a Toronto (Ontario) Driving License thru the following procedure:

Step-1 -Before we 'Land':
1. We must obtain a 'Letter of Authentication'* from the country's Roads & Transport Authority, explaining** our D/License.
2. Take also a 'True Translation Copy'* of our D/License from Road & Transport Authority. Both 1 & 2 maybe clubbed in one.
3. Obtain an International Driving License/Permit*** (IDL / IDP).
stating "more than 24 months" driving experience in our country.
*In English or French, the 2 Canadian Official Languages.
**The explanation should include 24 or 12 months driving experience [the Pre-conditions will apply].
***This is nothing but a translated copy of our present D/license. (it can be used in lieu of point-1 & 2 above).

Benefits of the IDL / IDP:
With the foregoing, we can drive a car abroad for three [3] months (2 months, in Ontario). Within that time apply for the Ontario Driving License. This International Driving Licenses [IDL/IDP]are issued against our original D/Licenses by the Automobile Associations or [sometimes] the RTA/RTO of our home country. Check them for more details.

Step-2 -After you 'Land':
In such cases we are called 'Out of Country Drivers' and we can skip the G2 'waiting period' and get the G2 license immediately [with that 24 months letter] or a G1 driving license [if we only have the above 12 months letter].

Now for the Ontario driver's licence are required to;
1. Present a valid foreign Driver's License*,
2. Provide an acceptable Proof of Identity [SIN, PR card etc.]
3. Pay all applicable Fees,
4. Pass a Vision Test
5. Pass the Written Knowledge Test -regarding Ontario's traffic rules.
*If it is not in English or French, it is to be accompanied by a written translation from a qualified translator; [we got that, as the Authentication Letter]

Note: Applicants are required to provide adequate proof of foreign driving experience. However, if it is not there, the ministry will accept applicants' declaration of their foreign driving experience on the driver's licence application for up to a maximum of 12 months experience. In that case we get the G1* license only.

Step-3 -The Tests to take:
Based on the 24 months Authentication Letter the ministry will recognize the applicant's foreign driving experience as certified on the authentication letter AND,

1. After Step-2, we can attempt the G2*Exit Road Tests (mandatory wait times are waived).
2. Upon successfully passing the G2* Exit Road Test, we get the G2* license.
3. After few months of driving under G2* we can apply for a G*Licence.
4. If we 'only' have the 12 months letter & not the 24, we qualify for G1* Road Test & the G1* driving license only.
5. If we don't provide any letter, we must pass the G1* road test and have a 12-month wait period for taking G2* road test.

*The License Grading Explained [G1, G2 & G]:
-G1 License has certain limitations like we have to always drive alongwith a G license holder. It is thus, useless for us, who have good & adequate driving experience under similar driving conditions & system as that of Canada [read 'left-hand drive' experience & similar road/traffic management conditions].
-G2 License is as good as G, except that we cannot drive on the Highway at certain times (Midnight Rush Hrs. when truck movement starts).
-G License is the 'full fledged' driving license.
...
Source:
http://www.drivetest.ca/en/license/OutOfCountryDrivers.aspx

Note:
1. The above procedure is mainly addressed for the Ontario (ON) province.
2. The procedure is pretty much similar with all other provinces as well [BC, NS, NB etc.].
3. If we are not coming from a similar driving condition country, we must take some training before we proceed.
4. Usually we can get the G2 driving license quite easily [with the foregoing steps].

Hope that helped...

Happy New Year in advance. How r u guys doing?

Miss this forum so much. Without this forum and the friends we made from here, it would have been really hard for us to settle in a new country like Canada. The members of this forums (those of us who flew early 2011 BDSkilled, GOAL, Sohail Chowdhury, Hemel, Swapnochary, Touhid, aybf, kingkhan and a lot more) we are still a big group in Canada and always keep in touch.

I have main confusion.
please help me .
My wife is architect and me is civil engineer.
she passed her graduation august 2010 but she joined architect company from December 2009 and still working in the same company.
Here is one point , passing time of graduation comes after joining time of company... actually reason is that , in last term of final year, there was only one officially cousre, she went to attend the classes of this course for two days per week, the classes of this course was finalized in novemver 2009. from december 2009, she was totally free for six days per week including sunday. during this period ,she had to attend only day for thesis project. so she applied for job , she got it on her ability by just showing her resume and mark sheets of each terms ( from 1st to 9th term , total terms of this degree are 10 in architect degree, becoz this is five year bachelor degree program). she took exam for only one course in april 2010 , that was for one day exams,..... after that she passed and got result of last 10th term of degree on august 2010, ........that was whole story.....now i am in fix , architect is in the MI3 list , she took exams for ielts , she got 10 points from the ielts,
total point are like below:
01-graduation: 20
02-IELTS: 10
03-age: 10
04- adability: 05 ( her husband brother is living in canada on immigration basis)
05- Her husband has master degree: 5
06- experience : 17 ( for two years) but there is little confusion for two years, which i stated above..will it be problem if passing time of graduation comes after joining time of working compnay... she has also expericnce certificate along with other documents like contracts, pay slips, salary certificate since december 2009 to up date..

Hello,
Do you wish to apply showing your wife as Principal applicant? What do you mean by ``IELTS 10``- English language proficiency? I think let her take a course in French language to get at least 2 points more and why do you not apply under your name as Principal ? However, best of luck.

They award separate points for your education and your working experience.
to the best of my knowledge ,

1. they have no such rule that working experience has to be achieved after the educational degrees ( bachelors, Masters) are done.

2. if you can show pay slips and salary statements, your work exp will be accepted before the educational degrees. condition is she must show that she worked for 37.5 hours per week.

Gulshan,
I am also an Architect. So, I can guess what ur wife faced for the due course in last year. Usually, CIC counts the experience after completion of the degree. I know someone who was rejected last year with same case as yours. My suggestion is to retake IELTS and try to get get at least 12 point. You will be then tension free. It will not be a big issue to get 12 point from IELTS for ur wife as she is an Architect. Rush for next date of registration please.

Mr. Tosher,
Thanks for your honest confession. I partly agree with you. I spent 20 years abroad in different countries as a senior executive of a multinational co. I spent some time in Canada as well. First when ever you move to a new country first 2 years time is very crucial and important, your future depends on this 2 years time so you need to plan carefully. 2 years ago I came back to BD and first few months only explored all the possibilities while 2 of my close friends immediately jumped into doing business needless to say they suffered losses and fortunately now on right track. For me I took a part time teaching job and later six months ago only started doing business.
For Immigrants first 2 months better try to know about the environment, which type of job or business is suitable for him that to check. Before going to do any business first to work there. MOST important at the beginning having mentality to learn, not to get misguided by a wrong person. PLZ VERY CAREFUL NOT TO GIVE ANY MONEY TO OTHER PERSONS. Good possibility in Canada is to get student loan so select a good subject and then study (it difficult no doubt but you need to accept to make a good future). Not to go there keeping in mind what one used to do in Bangladesh. Many doctors or engineers are working in gas stations or I saw Europe selling at the road side. Once I met one Bangladeshi selling flowers on the streets in New york but with his hard work only after one and half years later became owner of a shop at Jackson Heights. Some good people are there too, who will really guide you to select the right profession for you. Once one gentleman told me to buy a shop, when I asked him ok, but who will run this? He said don`t worry, my wife will take care it  That shop owner told me not to buy if I am personally not running that shop.
I am enjoying living in Bangladesh, my children were born and brought up abroad but they also adopted well. Still we wish to go for the future of children specially education. More than 5 lacs passing out HSC but only about 30 thousand get chances into public versities and nobody knows what job they will get here. So we decided to give another fight for the sake of our children. We found Canada and Canadian people specially are so nice, having accepting mentality of brown skin like us.
Don`t be disappointed, please work hard on right track and I am sure after 5 years you will another successful Bangladeshi. Don`t come back because your place is already filled by another person. I know many who went back home and only within 6 months again had to move to Canada. I fortunately found some same minded persons so spending time with them was refreshing us. Try to find good people like Dr. Hasib or others of this forum now in Canada.
Good luck to all.
