Accompanying my international student boyfriend to Quebec

Hello! I am a US citizen and my boyfriend is an Indian citizen. He is a surgical resident here in the USA, and he just got accepted into a surgical fellowship at McGill University in Montreal. He will get his international student CAQ without a problem. Will he be able to sponsor me as a common-law spouse so I can go with him? We have lived together here in the US for 1.5 years. I do not qualify on my own for a skilled worker visa. Thank you!
 
As far as I know, U.S citizens do not require visa to visit Canada.

However you will only be visiting not studying or working. If you're willing to do either, then only you need a visa. Plus you should contact the canadian embassy in the US as well just in case there are any limitations.

If you can prove C/law, you can apply for a spousal open work permit based on his study permit.
 
Thank you! I know that I can enter Canada as a visitor with just my passport, but that doesn't seem like a great option since his fellowship is 3 years long and I've read that you can't get Canada's health coverage as a visitor. How do you usually prove common law status? Thank you so much!
 
Well I'm not at all sure, all i know is that when I filled the visa application form, it had a family form in which the student is to provide information of their family and also mention the family members that would accompany them to canada. There was a spouse/common law partner tab in it as well. Another form that you guys will have to submit is the statutory declaration which is all about spouse/common law partners. you might also have to fill out the temporary resident visa form separately along with his, since it asks at the beginning whether you are the principal applicant or their spouse/partner.
