About calling CIC after missed appointment

Hi, I have a serious question need to get answers.

My mom applied the renewal for the PR card end of last year, and she had to go back to home country for a family emergency before the first letter pick-up appointment.
Now she's back and we are waiting for the second letter, however due to the lack of knowledge we did't call CIC 60 days after the firs appointment (as stated on the CIC website)
Would that effect my mother's application? Would it be cancelled?

I just called and the operator suggest me to fax the Vancouver(where i live) CIC office and explain why i missed my appointment.

what should i say?

The statement you mentioned earlier "she had to go back to home country for a family emergency" is a good explanation. Just provide more details on what the emergency exactly was.
