Dear All,

I came to know from some friends that Canada is changing the rule for renewal of RP. Previously it was for 2 years. Means one had to stay in Canada for atleast 2 years to get RP renewed but a couple of my friends told me that it has now been changed to 3 years. Means instead of 2 now everyone has to complete 3 years in Canada to renew RP.

How true is it?

Please do some research and share. I am also doing it. CIC Website does not state anything like this

Regards

Why take PR if you don't intend to live in Canada, if its two, three or four years?????????
CIC amends rules every now and then because people wanna challenge them.

Up to today there is no truth in this claim, it would be a major change in immigration law and have to go through the parliament of Canada. So far i do not hear a draft motion forget the actual change in law. Laws like these if passed, can not be applied retrospectively, so people will have enought time to make good with the residency requirement if changed at any time.

Unfortunately, it is indeed 3yrs.
Its confusion between PR obligation which is 2 yrs in last 5 years AND Citizenship requirement which is 3 years in last 4 years

No updates on CIC website.

Most people usually make a mess out of PR and Citizenship.

PR- 2 out of 5 years physically present in Canada without long absense
Citizenship- 3 out of 4 years physically present in Canada without long absense

Dear "dnyfyn"

Can you please explain what do you mean by "...without long absence". As to date, we only know that the rule is simple and straight 3 out of 4 for citizenship and 2 out of 5 for PRC.

Any other forum member has some idea about this new version; kindly share your thoughts.

Best regards,
Can10

Example-: you stay for 2.5 years and 1 year out of the country and you come and stay for 0.5 years. Basically you have covered 3 out of 4 years. However 1 year absence is an issue. Because for a considerable period of time you have been out. They will basically question you why you have been out.

Small trips like holiday, crossing over to America, visit friends and relatives are fine.

Long absence for training, representing Canadian companies abroad or parents are ill are ok. Some people just go and stay abroad for a long time and come back to claim the citizenship; so they look into long absence.
