Hey guys,

I'm having a momentary panic attack here and am worried that I may have calculated incorrectly! Am hoping that someone can either talk me off my ledge or put me out of my misery.

I just read that for citizenship, you must be a permanent resident for three years before being eligible to apply? I know that you had to be physically present in Canada for 3/5, and I have been in Canada for five years this June, but do you actually have to have legit permanent residency for three full years? I filled out the "Check Eligibility" form on CIC's website and said no to the question of "Have you been a permanent resident, and physically present in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years", and then it asks if I've lived in Canada with temporary resident status in the last five years, which I said yes to. Then it asks if I've been a permanent resident and physically present in Canada for at least 2 out of the last 5 years, which I said yes on. The eligibility thing says that I'm "probably" eligible for citizenship.

From June 2013-June 2014 I had a temporary foreign worker permit, and then the gap between June 2014 and January 2016 I had a temporary resident permit. I received my PR on January 3rd, 2016.

I filled out the physical presence calculator and it says that I am eligible to apply as of the beginning of March, but I have only been a permanent resident for just over two years. I know that for physical presence you can count each day before your PR as a half day (up to 365 days), but does that also fulfill that third year of necessary permanent residency?

Thanks so much - sorry for the wall of text but I'm losing it at the moment!

You need to have been physically present in Canada for 3 out of 5 years, and time spent in Canada before becoming a permanent resident counts as half a day up to a maximum of 365 days (one year). Therefore since if you can get no further credit than 1 year, you obviously must be a permanent resident for a minimum of 2 years (it's impossible to qualify otherwise).

However, if the requirement was 3 years as a permanent resident, why would they even be bothering asking you questions about your time before that? It wouldn't matter if that was true!!!

In short, you're all good to go in March.

Haha, that is what I thought! I don't know why this miraculously looked so foreign to me all of a sudden, as I have researched and re-researched for months to make sure everything was good to go. CIC sure knows how to get under our skin though, that's for sure...I can't wait to not be in a perpetual state of worry anymore! :)

Thanks for reconfirming - I really appreciate it!
