According to their figure this will only reduce the backlog by 15% which means there are about 133000 people waiting for a visa In PGP stream.

So this means we may be pushed for next year.

I hope not, but the figures are difficult to comprehend. I actually thought there were only a small volume of applications left in the backlog.

Out of curiosity, how did the 133k number come about? The assumption that all 20K are going towards the backlog isn't accurate given we know CIC processes applications in parallel i.e. backlogged mixed in with new.

The last known (official) backlog number I can find is from way back in 2013:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/backgrounders/2013/2013-10-29a.asp

Even then the number was nowhere close to 133K, not to mention there had been a moratorium on PGP applications.

133k people in line for PGP. This will take forever just like before at this quota rate. Committment failed miserably!

They said this in their release today:

IRCC is doubling the number of sponsorship applications for parents and grandparents that it will accept for processing to 10,000 a year. 20,000 admissions are planned under the Parent and Grandparent Program and by the end of 2016 it is expected that the backlog inventory will be reduced by approximately 15%.

So if 20000 is only going to reduce the backlog by 15% then they must have around 133000 in the inventory at the moment.

Meaning that another 85% will still be waiting at the end of 2016.

Before this turns into purple monkey dishwasher ... ::)

What I attempted to say above is that there is no reason to believe that there are 133k applications in the backlog and many reasons to believe the aforementioned number is much less than 133k.

Someone please screenshot and send to media the 15% thing on IRCC website please. Something very fishy going on there. How come 20k visa only clear 15% backlog of PGP?

Here is the article about 15% reduction to the backlog:

http://news.gc.ca/web/article-en.do?nid=1038709

Its the last line under the "reuniting more families" heading.

That's what I figured you had implied earlier. Hence my comment, "The assumption that all 20K are going towards the backlog isn't accurate given we know CIC processes applications in parallel i.e. backlogged mixed in with new."

Since we know that applications are being processed in parallel, it is reasonable to see not all 20k are going to reduce the backlog. Only portion of that 20k are being used to reduce the backlog. So, let's say 10k of those 20k (for argument's sake) are being used to reduce the backlog, then 15% reduction by those 10k slots would mean a backlog of under ~70k.

Again, my point is that we know CIC will use that 20k for both new and old applications. Using past numbers, even then the backlog was never this big. 15% reduction is because of a number smaller than 20k.

Just offering my contrarian opinion ...

What did you mean by parallel processing. I have not come across any evidence for that. They process applications on a first in first out method. New cases are not getting processed along with the old cases.
