Family unification is a major issue in the immigrant community and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau also promised that if elected he’d grant immediate permanent residency to spouses of immigrants, instead of making them wait two years on conditional status.

Let's be clear...family reunification is not just an issue for immigrants...it is an issue for Canadians born in Canada, immigrated to Canada and Canadian residents who live in Canada. We need to convince our politicians that they are not serving their own citizens and residents - regardless of how they arrived in Canada. As stated in the article, family members can be even more productive contributors to the economy because of the support systems they have.

I actually lean towards Condition 51 as being a good thing so I can't say i am in support of this...

I agree. Condition 51 means nothing if both parties are living together in a genuine relationship. I've lived with my wife for almost a year now, and it hasn't affected us the slightest bit. I feel like the majority of people who are worried about it are the ones who want to do everything to remain in Canada despite a mutual breakdown of the marriage with no abuse towards the applicant.

Condition 51 protects the sponsor, but the applicant is also protected by being able to keep their PR status when they're abused by the sponsor.

I am glad they are getting rid of it...

There was someone on here..Ricky who has said that his GF or Wife cheated on him after he finally became a PR.. Since he has Condition 51 he now trapped here scared to leave in case he has to go home.

I am sure many of you are the same... us, the sponsored ones shouldn't feel like were still here temporary after finally waiting this long to get PR.... I know this Condition 51 doesn't affect myself or others as were all in stable relationships but for whatever reason if things go BAD we are the ones who are screwed and have to go back to our country.

Deep down I am 50/50 about it, Yes it helps fraudulent relationships but on the other hand the CIC should spot these during the processing.

I am 50/50 about it. I am one of the PR's with that condition. Obviously, my husband plan on living together forever, so it's not an issue. But, for others who may not be so lucky I can see why that would be a problem for them. Something that is out of their control happens, and they're forced to stay in a relationship just to stay & live where they've put down roots.

I wonder, since I was given the condition before this new ruling that may happen, will mine stay or be removed?

I will be Condition 51 when I arrive and have have no problem with it at all. If I understand correctly it means if my marriage ends in divorce within 2 years I must return to the US. Seems fair to me.
I am asking to come to this country to be with my husband. Why would I expect to be allowed to stay if the marriage failed within two years? And for those who are fraudulent, I hope this will help stop it.

It would stay, since any changes that the Liberals would propose would not be grandfathered.

As someone who is about to get PR with condition 51, I can't say that I would support its abolishment.
I'm sure it helps immensely to prevent fraud. As for the aforementioned situation, I would support some legislation for cases like that so that the PR doesn't lose his/her status.

I understand that in theory it shouldn't affect couples who are legitimately, happily married (or common-law or whatever). But in some cases it does. My husband and I are currently outside of Canada, because we won't be ready to move for awhile. Now we've got to somehow prove that we are cohabitating at this Ukrainian address - which we are - but we're finding that pretty tricky to prove with paper. Landlord doesn't want to register me (a foreigner) as living at the place, and I can't get ANY utilities (internet, electricity, heat) billed in my name because they only want to deal with the Ukrainian citizen. I even tried to get the newspaper or a magazine delivered in my name, but they don't put a name on it, they just bring it to an address.

So, if Canada ever checks our Condition 51, we won't be able to prove that we were abiding by it.

Its just not the condition 51, The CP's even changed the definition of citizens, see my son is a Canadian Citizen, but not as a child born in Canada, a whole lot of difference comes into being a Canadian citizen. At least I know CP's policy are always against immigration. I don't need to see just one condition of immigration, but as a whole.

Please, your son is canadian as every canadian in Canada. Just because your son can't pass on citizenship himself doesn't make him any less Canadian than anyone else. My two daughters are Canadian and they cannot pass on citizenship either. If they want their children to have Canadian citizenship have the child in Canada. The same goes for your son.

There is a reason why the law was change. To prevent generations of Canadians being born overseas without any attachment to Canada. I happen to support this change even though it impacts my two daughters.

Remember if your son had a child outside Canada, he can sponsor his child for PR when he is ready to move back and settle in Canada. If son doesn't want to settle back in Canada, why should his child get Canadian citizenship. Once child has PR, child can apply for citizenship. This is one way to enforce ties to Canada.

Not surprising that you want this conditional 51 removed. Your past posts do indicate or imply that you intend to dump your gf, (not common law according to you).
