I wanted to explain my situation so that I can get some help.
Im a Canadian citizen and i got married in 2012, then ended up going abroad to study, the country i am still in, made it possible for me to bring my wife here to live with me, so we have been living together since 2013, we have kids together, my kids have Canadian passports. im finishing in about a year's time and i figured that ill apply now, hopefully till i finish, she gets her visa (she has a visiting visa currently). so now i have a few questions:
1. is there some form i can fill out so i dont have to enter all the details about our marriage, since it was a while ago, hard to remember everything, all the different events and such.
2. do i need to add our kids to our applications? because most of what i see is sponsoring dependent children.
3. will my situation make it easier or harder to get our application accepted?
4. will her having a visiting visa also make it easier to get accepted?

1. There are forms, look at the package. When you provide supporting information, it may make sense to include explanatory information or notes, depending on the details. But you don't have to write a novel - if you've been together for seven years with kids, just the facts and some supporting info and docs (pictures, wedding info, etc) should go most of the way to showing it's a real relationship.
2. The only slightly confusing aspect is this: on forms about applicants, your children who are citizens are not applicants and should not be included as applicants (or dependents of the applicant). On background information forms about your spouse, the children will be included as her family members (as you may be on some forms as her spouse, even though you are sponsor and already a citizen). Keep those two concepts separate and it will being to make sense.

(Sorry, not sure I've done a good job explaining this, it's not always easy to keep the terminology precise and simple.)

I totally agree, there are some sections where the terminology can be misunderstood, i think. some questions i'm not even sure what they're asking of us. currently, i'm just filling in everything i can remember, leaving some blanks, like dates of some of the documents, then i will go through everything again and again and again, and hopefully they make sense the second or third time i go through it.

do you know anything about form 1344, it has a section for a co-signer, but says on the instructions that if you are sponsoring a spouse you dont need a co-signer, but when im trying to validate the form, it says that ive left that section blank and its sending me there to fill it in. do you know anything about that?

Can you point to specifically what section you have left blank? I do not see any fields on co-signer that need to be filled in for validation to work. You must have left something else blank.

The only relevant section I see is box three in Part 1, "Is there a co-signer on this application?". You must tick one of the two boxes, yes or no. Tick "no".

that was my error, because ive been filling them out over the last few days, and seems i had check YES to the the question about co-signer. my apologies!! im just really nervous about these documents, everyone i know seems to make such a big deal about them *sigh*. so im making errors in dumb ways...

No worries, it is a bit intimidating. Fill the forms out in chunks and take breaks and come back later, most of my questions became more clear when I took a break and came back later with my head less full of stress.

The people who have made a big deal about the forms are correct. An incorrect answer can lead to a returned app. If it is something material, such as not mentioning a previous visa refusal, it can lead to refusal and a ban. All that takes is checking a No instead of a Yes.

I'm not saying this to scare you but to make you understand that you need to take your time and really understand each question before you answer it. As said above, take time away and come back to it if you are confused.

This is a good point, and I will add: check, double-check, triple-check even the parts you think you understand and especially those parts you think you already did.

Applications that are submitted with what seem like "minor" oversights - like forgetting to sign a particular form - risk being sent back, by mail, with no updates until you receive the file back. That basically means at least two months lost.

Better to take the time and do it carefully.

The only advice I have in this regard: I found the most important document in the entire package to be the checklist. Follow it carefully and check, check, check.
