Crazylucy, you do not need to extend your visitor status if you applied for an owp. I called cic a few times and asked different people about this and they all told me the same thing.

Do you already have first stage approval (AiP)? If so: then you can apply for an Open Work Permit. Don't walk the 'regular' work permit way, because it will be denied. You need to take a special route.

Look for "Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay or Remain in Canada" (IMM 1249), the Document Checklist (IMM 5556) and the Guide (IMM 5553). On the document checklist only the sections ALL APPLICANTS and WORK PERMIT apply to you.

As for IMM 1249:
- check option C (initial / extention work permit)
- fill in your client ID #
- In box C-9, make a nice story, but mention the PR application
- In box D-10: extend my stay in Canada until: (fill in the date your passport expires), reason: say that you're applying for PR, that the wait is long and that you want to work while awaiting the final decision
- the rest you can fill in yourself

Remember to type/write "N/A" for all fields not applicable to you, otherwise the package could be returned to you because you might've forgotten to fill them in.

Then DO NOT send the package to the Work Permit department, but send it to the Permanent Residency applications in Vegreville. On the envelope, write: PLEASE ADD TO FILE AND PROCESS ASAP to avoid the regular mail room queue.

If you don't have AiP yet, write on the envelope: PLEASE DO NOT PROCESS BEFORE FIRST STAGE APPROVAL.

Do not forget to pay 150$ to CIC and include the receipt.

Slightly out of contexts here, but here we go.

I have noticed a similar theme that I had not taken into account when I first went down the road off applying for residency. I am married and have children, from Canada and in fact I am the only foreigner if you like, I applied for my residency in Jan 2009. Anyway, after checking my status on my application in March 2009 I noticed that they had not even started to process the application (sent to Alberta). On seeking further advice I was advised it could take a year plus until my ‘open work permit’ arrived as long as there were no issues. I had not taken the long time frame into account when I left my own country, as my wife was pregnant and did not want to miss the new born, and I realised that we would not be able to support ourselves for the time it would take; not that we had a clear picture on that and to be honest I just did what came natural to me.

It was decided to take us all back to my home (as really the only place I have any right or can affect anything is my own), which is no pick nick with the current economic situation. Due to money issues we had trouble with air fares ect, so I withdrew my residency application to release the funds. This was perhaps a silly idea, but I was actually advised to by some what turned out to a buffoon. Now it was not any bed of roses, and we have ended up with half the family in my own country and the other half in Canada, money being the huge issue.

I have attempted to acquire work in Canada through the traditional work permit route, but this has not gone well nor have we had the money to either reapply for residency or have the none-dual national half of the family come over here, our visa application fees are huge not to mention the strict guidelines attached to them. Now I can’t afford to sit on my rear end in Canada for 1 – 3 years either to wait for the two decided if three Canadians are allowed to keep their husband/father.

I only ask to see if anyone here has had similar experiences, and like me wonder why the system is so slow? Neither my own country nor Canada seems to care if our family is together, and Canada is quite happy to see possible residents go bankrupt while waiting for their paperwork. I also have noticed that there is no good and simple free advice for immigrants or at least I have not seen any. Most Lawyers I have spoken to have told me that they would not touch it with a barge pole as it is beset with pitfalls. It does to me seem that they should award the work permit bit first, the go through the long winded bureaucracy bit as it is not easy for anyone to not work and live anywhere.

For the record I am not trying to see like I am moaning, I am just curious. Also, with the exception of telling me I am a buffoon which I well aware of, could anyone out there tell me any good advice?

Thank you all
;D

Hi dottorre, welcome on the forum board.

It's too bad you didn't persist on your application back in 2009. Waiting times were a bit shorter back then. Now we're looking at a year for first stage + the open work permit, it used to be about 8-9 months. Don't know who told you about the 1year+, but it was exaggerated. Only the second stage could take longer or not, but first stage is always a fixed waiting line. Why does it take so long: simply because you're not the only one trying to get in, hence the waiting line. And some parts of the application (mainly the background checks) just take some time to complete.
Did you already look into the outland waiting times? Sometimes you could be done just in a few months! I'm not very familiar with that option and I know it doesn't give the option for a work permit at first stage approval, but I think I read that some people had the possibility to choose which embassy they wanted to use and that way were able to choose the embassey with the biggest rate of success and shortest waiting line. Maybe dive into this by asking in some outland topics.

What you could do: get back to Canada and do any kind of volunteering work. Through the volunteering, try to network and get in touch with possible employers that would be interested in you and wouldn't mind doing their part to get your paperwork done for the work permit. Such a work permit (after requesting the Labour Market Opinion) takes about a month to process (if I remember correctly).

If the Canadian embassy in your country offers special youngsters programs (such as Working Holiday and Young Professionals), have a look into that! Those are the easiest ways to get a work permit (but you usually need to be under 30y old).

I know it's hard, but you can't get anywhere if you're bankrupt. Maybe it would be better to part from your family for two or three months just to work like insane to be able to pay for the applications and your first two months in Canada.

Whatever you do: good luck! And don't hesitate to ask more questions! :)

Thank you sir,

I hear Canada is over subscribed, Canada is known across the world as home the anyone and welcomes all. It was never my intention to move to Canada, thats love for you.

I had thought of Volunteering, but was not sure if there a special permit for that – any ideas? There are several areas of volunteering my skills are going to be welcomed.

To be honest my advice came from some folks I met in bar who had gone through the same process and what I found on the internet. (IE: CIC)
I have been looking at the working holiday permit thing, it’s closed where I am at the moment but assuming I can find the min. Funds I will be perusing it.
Thanks for replying!

It's per year. Inscriptions for 2012 aren't open yet in all countries. Might check again the first week of December.

Volunteering is permitted without permits, as long as you don't get in the way of Canadians that desperately need that position (like for school). Also, they're not fond of people working on farms without medical check. That's CIC. In reality: you can pretty much volunteer where-ever you want. Exceptions: hospitals and (primary and high) schools.

The CIC website has a section on volunteering work.

Guys, I just got an update on my E-cas... not sure if it is good:

We received your application for permanent residence on June 17, 2010.

We started processing your application on August 26, 2010.

A decision has been made and you will be contacted.

Medical results have been received.

We received the requested information on June 15, 2011. Thank you for providing the information.

We sent you medical instructions on November 25, 2011. To avoid delays, please provide us the information requested in the letter as soon as possible. Please consider delays in mail delivery before contacting us.

What the heck is that? Are they requesting my medical tests again? As you can see they received my medicals some time ago. If yes, it is terrible cause we have to waste money on it again and not to mention they take MONTHS to open letters and attach new docs to our files.

Any help/suggestion?

Thanks

WOW...so frustrating! Call CIC on Monday to make sure but it looks like u have to redo ur medical. I feel for u CEC.

Ok this reply was from yesterday but my internet was acting quite irritable last night so I said, "to hell with it." and saved this for later.

Thanks for the Welcome LY! That first paycheck is always the sweetest.

Babyhangon said:
thanks for this nice reminder, californiajeninca. so, the AIP letter will be good enough to apply for the OHIP? would you kindly list things to do after AIP? what i know includes: OWP, temp SIN card, Ontario health card, what else? by the way, we're in Toronto. my wife overstayed her visitor's visa. she can't wait to restore a normal status here. ;D
Hi Babyhangon. Yes, the AIP letter is what you need. You also need proof of mailing address in Ontario. Driver License or bill with your name on it. It's for residency requirement. Also, if you are married (and you are the wife) bring your marriage license. I'm not sure about OWP or temp SIN since I didn't come here on a workpermit. I just applied for OHIP and waited for my landing interview. If you want good P.R pictures that the photographer will stand behind, I recommend Wal-Mart. Bring the PR picture requirement and make sure they check their work. I don't want to wish what I went through on anyone.
Other than that, just make sure you have your pictures, passport, confirmation of P.R letters, $$ and set your alarm clock for an early day on your landing day.

I know other people have overstayed their visitor visa and there are some posts about it. I'm not too sure what to do in these cases but I would make sure to get that resolved soon. Good luck!

Pepe, no te preocupes de tu entrevista. Es muy facil. Buena suerte y felicitaciones!
