Hello everyone,

I’m a recent graduate of a 2-year tech diploma in Manitoba and currently on a 3-year PGWP. I recently started a full-time tech job (37.5 hours/week) as a payroll employee through a consulting company and I’m assigned to a client company.

The contract is issued for 6 months at a time and may be renewed based on business needs, which I’ve been told is common in tech consulting.

I understand the Skilled Worker in Manitoba stream requires 6 months of employment with a full-time long-term job offer.

If my contract is renewed after the first 6 months, would that generally satisfy the “long-term employment” requirement? Would an employment confirmation letter stating the role is ongoing normally be acceptable?

Has anyone here applied to MPNP with a renewable contract position in the tech industry?

Thank you!

Hi crizzadang,

Here are a couple of important points to think about before relying on just a contract renewal:

1. The "Long-Term" Requirement MPNP needs a full time, long-term job offer that satisfies its standards. A contract renewal along with a letter from your employer saying the role is ongoing (and not connected to a specific project end date) can help demonstrate this. However, it ultimately depends on the officer's judgment, there is no guaranteed baseline.

2. Your Employment Structure (The Bigger Flag) MPNP clearly excludes independent contractors and third-party contract work where the relationship is unclear. Since you work for a consulting firm assigned to a client, make sure you are a real T4 payroll employee of the consulting firm. If an officer sees any aspect of independent contracting, that experience may not count toward your 6 month requirement.Since both points depend on the officer's discretion and the exact wording of your contract, it's a good idea to have an MPNP savvy consultant review your employment agreement before you apply.

Good luck!
