Hello, I received a 1 year PGWP in May 2024 due to expiry of my passport. April 2025 I applied to get the remainder 2 years and I got denied. The reason for denial was -

*****The client has requested an open work permit. Upon review, the client does not have an approved permanent residence (APR) application in progress and does not meet the eligibility requirements for any other open work permit category. The client's application package does not indicate a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) exemption, nor has the client provided evidence of a valid LMIA. As the client does not meet the regulatory criteria for issuance of an open work permit, the application is refused as per R186.*******

I checked my application and I did apply for PGWP extension not a general open work permit. I have stopped working and applied for visitors record, but I want to know if this is maybe an error and can it be appealed, because I don’t think I have done anything wrong here.

So PGWP extension due to passport expiry is a paper application. When did your PGWP expiry and when did you mail in your PGWP application? So you waited for a year for response. Did the letter say you must leave Canada?

To extend your PGWP, you must apply on paper after you get a new passport that’s valid for the entire period you’re eligible for the work permit.

For some reason I didn’t see that I was to apply by paper. My coworker and I both applied a week apart from each other & we both did it online, hers took 7 months and was approved in November, mine was just denied this February. I also have seen many comments on Reddit about people getting extensions online. I see now that it clearly states I must apply on paper, so this was my mistake.

My PGWP expired May 2025, I applied for extension in April 2025 so I was on maintained status. I’m wondering now if there’s anything I can do as I only received 1 year PGWP, should I then apply for extension by paper ? Or can I send a letter of reconsideration. I have already stopped working as of Friday.

Well you cannot apply for PGWP anymore because it has been almost a year. You are out of status too. Did the letter say you have to leave Canada ASAP or that you can restore to visitor. Get a lawyer for advice because PGWP is by paper so don't know how you are eligible for reconsideration.
