I will travel to colombia on january using RTD, I couldn’t find any information about visa requirements cause with my nationality I don’t need visa to travel to colombia.
So I emailed the embassy, they said that I do not need visa since my nationality is Turkish. However I am still fearing that they could reject my entry to colombia, or even back to Canada as I am using the power (?) of my nationality. Did anyone had a similar experience?
Here is the e-mail.
We would like to inform you that it is possible to travel to Colombia using a Canadian Travel Document.

However, the visa requirement is determined by your nationality of origin.

In your case, as a Turkish national, you do not need to apply for a visa to enter Colombia for tourism purposes.

Did you specify that you are a refugee?

my email;
Hi, I am a protected person (1951 Convention Refugee) here in Canada. I have a valid refugee travel document that was issued by Canada, my nationality is Turkish, and I am planning to visit Colombia by the end of January and hoping to stay 11 days. I was wondering if I need a visa to enter Colombia, if so, are there any additional application steps other than those mentioned in the Colombian government website.

I would clarify if you are not a PR or not. This is especially the case if you are not a PR since non-PRs tend to have a higher chance of needing a visa from countries. Being Turkish shouldn’t have any impact on your ability to travel Colombia visa free. All protected people and refugees should have the same visa requirements since you are not traveling on your home country passport.

Unfortunalely, it's not so simple.
The "place of birth" on RTD is also taken in account to determine if the person needs or not a visa.
This was already discussed in the topic "travel document".
I've contacted Mexico (I got a visa), El salvador, Costa rica, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Chile ( I got a visa), Argentina, Uruguay. Some I don't need a visa, and my roomate (nicaraguan) does need most of them using the same RTD.
Colombia has this information very explict on IATA travel centre which nationalities using Canadian RTD are exempt from visa.

Hello, thank you so much for your response, yes normally as a Turkish I don’t need visa to Colombia neither but since I won’t be using any documents from my home country I didn’t understand the part how I will prove my nationality. On RTD it doesn’t mention anything about nationality but my birthplace. Hope that is enough. Thank you! I have my return ticket and all the documents that Canada gave me. Its a direct flight. And yes I don’t have my pr yet, I hope everything goes smoothly cause I am very nervous.

Are you SURE that at the ID page doesn't have your city and country code of birth (TUR)?
It's under date of birth, and at right of your the gender.

Also at the 3rd page it says inside "This document cannot be used to travel to Turkey" .

My sugestion is, take your notice of decision and work permit with you to show when boarding back, since you don't have a PR yet. I had a big issue with FLAIR to return canada last time when coming from Mexico.

Yeah you are right, sorry, why did you have issues? Okay I will take my work permit and NOD with me. And I am flying with avianca, I hope everything goes smoothly.

Quick update as I am back from my trip, I didn’t have any issues.

First of all as some people mentioned here your nationality still matters even if you travel with a RTD, so make sure to contact the embassy of the county you’d like to visit. And don’t listen to some pricks on this forum.

Second of all, when I bought my tickets, I selected my nationality as my home country but the document as a passport that was issued by Canada. I checked in with no problem, and even printed my boarding pass at the self serve kiosk. Even though I checked in I still wanted to make sure and went to the counter with the agents of the airline and explained the situation (when I left Canada they did something on their side about my document, but on return they didn’t even bother).
When I arrived at colombia they just asked ordinary questions such as where will you stay and how long, do you carry prohibited items etc. etc. and he stamped my document.
After my trip was over, I got into the plane with no problem, nobody asked nothing. At montreal airport the first officer (kiosks don’t work for rtd) asked me where did I go and why and how long and asked me to see a second officer. Second officer didnt even ask anything, grabbed my document stamped the declaration paper and said welcome back.
And Im home now.
I don’t hold a PR.
