I appreciate your reply... One more thing, please... I've read comments where people say you need to upload your current work permit and notice of decision as a protected person, but there is no option on where to upload those documents. So I want to know if it really matters? And if so, how or where do I upload those documents?

Honestly, I have never uploaded these documents. I have successfully renewed my WP twice.

Yes, comments like this (where the OP forgot to include the notice of decision)
https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-i...travel-document-expired.875050/#post-11104189 and this (where the OP got the rejection for missing that) https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-i...-document-expired.875050/page-2#post-11105853

Not sure. The above is for a RTD - which is different from a work permit application.

There was no earlier step that allowed you to upload files? If there was, that was probably when you should have included these. See if you can go back.

Otherwise it might not show up until the last step. (This is the case for the online citizenship app, for example.)

Worst case, if you finish the app and never see an option - you can send a webform to attach the docs to your app. Specifically you'd use https://secure.cic.gc.ca/ClientContact/en/Application/Form/72

Considering that it's 227 days for work permit processing according to https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...vices/application/check-processing-times.html I'd say that it's too soon to have received a new work permit yet. You've still got some time to go.

I need guidance on a couple of things at the moment and might come back with more questions later .

My work permit expires in March 2026, and I’m planning to submit my renewal application this month so that IRCC has enough time to process it.
  1. My passport is currently with IRB and it will also expire in 2026. I have recently received my Canadian Travel Document (RTD). Should I use the details from the RTD for the work permit application?
  2. In IMM 5710, what is the correct answer for Section 3, where it asks: “I am applying for one or more of the following”?
  3. In the “Details of intended work in Canada” section, I work as a ride-sharing driver. Should I provide the Uber/Lyft company name and address, or can I leave that section blank? (I suspect leaving it blank might not be accepted.)
Thank you in advance for your time and guidance

As the very first post of this thread states, you can do this. OP did this the first time when applying.
I applied to renew my work permit. At that time, I submitted the Refugee Travel Document as part of my application, and I was issued a one-year open work permit, which matched the validity period of the travel document.

This is for a PGWP which is different from the open work permit that you are applying for as a protected person. That said, from https://www.rrc.ca/international/wp...tion-Work-Permit-imm5710e-Sample-Form-Web.pdf

It seems you would be fine with choosing "* Apply for a work permit for the first time or with a new employer"

As per IRCC's own guidance from https://ircc.canada.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=1361 leaving the name/address blank will be accepted and is the way you should do it.

> In the “Details of intended work in Canada” section of the IMM 5710 application form:

  • choose “Open Work Permit” for question 1

Thank you for the detailed explanation and for providing the links. I really appreciate your help.

Is there anyone recently received an approval on the extension of the Open Work Permit? My OWP expires next week, and I applied 7 weeks ago. I got the WP-EXT the next day, which is good but it’s useless if you want to change employers… so basically it solves nothing.
I received my one after 8 week.

Applied June 26, Extension June 27, Final decision August 8. Hard copy August 13.
My partner has open work permit since married to me. We’ve applied for extension in June 20th and approved in August 6th. Today August 13th received hard copy in the mailbox.

I saw the posts above in this sub suggesting it takes roughly 8 weeks to process but couldn't find anything sooner. I don't know when the processing time became 227 days but it's absolutely ridiculous. Two years ago my extension was approved in ONE week. Isn't it pretty straightforward to extend a work permit for a protected person? We are already suffering the excessive PR application times and have to renew this document God knows how many times.

I think it's primarily meant to be written proof of maintained status (formerly known as implied status) so you can do things like renew provincial healthcare and so on.

That said I've heard of folks with understanding employers who were willing to take the risk to hire someone with a WP-EXT and an expired SIN. And according to https://ircc.canada.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=1181&top=15 you can raise a webform to ask for additional written proof while the application remains under processing (I suppose in case the original WP-EXT expires? do WP-EXT letters expire?)

Unfortunately, I have an idea on both points. From https://thewalrus.ca/canada-held-th...ional-students-then-slammed-it-in-their-face/

> While the government succeeded in discouraging international students from coming to Canada, it didn’t seem to think about the international students already here. Due to the policy changes and the ineligibility for PGWPs, between 70,000 and 130,000 migrant students would lose their status in two years following the policy change. Some of these students, quickly and predictably, adopted a Plan B to stay in Canada. Nearly 13,000 international students applied for asylum in Canada by September 2024, an increase of about 1,600 from the year before.
> Even if these claims eventually fail, the students–cum–asylum seekers will earn another three years in Canada as their applications are considered—the same length as a PGWP, as it turns out. During this time, they’re eligible for health care, reduced tuition, and work permits. At the very least, they can spend a few years paying back some of their recruitment and tuition debt. I don’t condone fraudulent asylum applications

Emphasis mine. So in short, it's not just PR, there's an actual and real backlog for protected person open work permits too.

Edit: Maybe try raising a webform to ask for written proof that you can work for the remaining time (the 227 days in the future from when you applied) unless a decision is made first. That might be enough for an understanding employer to agree to hire you during the interm.

Hi everyone,

My Open Work Permit will expire at the end of this year. I applied for an extension about a month ago and received the WP-EXT letter confirming maintained status. I am currently unemployed and actively attending interviews. I am unsure how to communicate my work authorization details to employers. Should I mention the original expiry date at the end of the year, or should I use the date from the new WP-EXT letter?

Also, does starting a new job with the maintained status while currently unemployed pose any issues?

If anyone has clear information or experience with this situation, I’d really appreciate your insights. Thanks!

My preference would be to use the WP-EXT letter's date, just because it's longer so gives you more time. It shouldn't matter if you're hired before the original work permit expires.

As per this earlier post on this thread, even a WP-EXT can be considered useless for changing employers (meaning maintained status is in an even worse position compared to that), https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-i...rk-permit-renewal.873488/page-4#post-11110641

The main issue is that, from what I understand, a new employer can legally insist on having an unexpired SIN before letting a new hire start, but one can't renew the SIN at Service Canada with an WP-EXT, only an actual work permit will do.
