You can work until the decision is made. It should be mentioned in the letter. Can a spouse on spousal open work permit extension application continue working after the elapsed of the IRCC first 6 months authorisation letter to work while the extension application still awaiting approval?
"You are authorized to continue working under the same conditions as your original work permitYou can work until the decision is made. It should be mentioned in the letter.
yeah the wording is weird but that means if the date on the letter pass, you're still good till the decision is made"You are authorized to continue working under the same conditions as your original work permit
until 7th July 2025 or until a decision is made on your application, whichever is first." this what my letter says, I am worried about the sentence "whichever is first", does it mean I can stay in Canada but can't work post 7th July?
How is the wording weird? It clearly says OP can work until July 7th or the date application is processed, whichever comes first.yeah the wording is weird but that means if the date on the letter pass, you're still good till the decision is made
Yeah that's what I meant, the wording says the opposite of the maintained status ruleHow is the wording weird? It clearly says OP can work until July 7th or the date application is processed, whichever comes first.
That said, the statement is contradictory to the current rule which does allow work under maintained status.
Hi, I am an international full-time student currently enrolled in the Communication diploma program and have applied for an upgrade to the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, starting in January 2026.
I would like to inquire about the Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) eligibility under the updated IRCC regulations. My spouse currently holds a valid open work permit based on my student status. I understand that recent changes may affect eligibility for extensions depending on the type of program I am enrolled in.
Could you please confirm:
I appreciate your guidance on this matter.
- Whether the BA in Psychology qualify as a professional degree under IRCC’s criteria for SOWP eligibility?
- If not, are there any other programs that would meet the criteria for my spouse to extend their work permit?

Thank you for the response. That means my spouse won't be eligible for an extension if I apply for my study extension.1.Not a professional degree
2. They would need to qualify for their own work permit.
Thank you so muchhttps://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...ur-spouse-common-law-partner-work-canada.html
1. Read the link that outlines professional degrees.
2. LMIA with closed work permit. Depending on citizenship then IEC visa. If fluent in French then job offer through Francophone Mobility Program. If US citizen, CUSMA with job offer.
