Hi!

I am a Turkish citizen applying for PR (my partner is sponsoring me). My application was returned due to incomplete police certificate. I have lived in Canada since I was 18, I have only been in Turkey for maximum three months in a row, and have not been in any country other than Canada for longer than six months. I submitted a request for police certificates, the only line I left incomplete on the form is 'name in original script'. I did this because my name is written in latin alphabet, but I do have umlauts, I just did not think that made a difference (looking back, it probably does). I also uploaded a criminal record check from Canada because I originally thought I needed it and thought it could not hurt (although looking back I see that was a mistake, as the document is useless to IRCC and confusing).

Before I send it back, I'm looking for feedback on the correct course of action, or just understanding why I got my application returned. Do I refill the form with my name with umlauts, remove the criminal records check, and add a letter of explanation that I have not resided in any country other than Canada for longer than 6 months or do I seek a Turkish criminal records check?

I would get a police certificate/record check from turkey just in case but from what I understand I need to travel to the nearest Turkish embassy to get this record and I would like to avoid doing this as I would need to travel from halifax to montreal.

Thanks!

It sounds like the missing “name in original script” might be the reason your application was returned. Since your name uses umlauts, it’s safer to fill that line exactly as shown on your Turkish passport, and also include a short letter explaining you haven’t lived in any country other than Canada for more than 6 months. You probably don’t need a Turkish police certificate if you’ve only stayed there for short visits, but it could be worth confirming this directly with IRCC or a visa officer before sending everything back.
