My common law partner added me to his PR application, unfortunately due to Domestic Violence I had to leave. I contacted immigration and they informed that when the PR is approved, it’s his responsibility to inform me. I heard from a Mutual friend that our application was approved and passports were requested but he told immigration we were no longer together. So he provided his and only him got the PR. I would like to know if it’s possible to remove a spouse after approval and what steps to take

I'm sorry for your situation.

It's absolutely possible to remove a spouse or common law partner at any time in the process right up until the approval and passport request stage. It makes sense that IRCC dropped you from the application since you are no longer togther. Unfortunately you only qualified for PR due to being in a common law relationship with him. Once you left that common law relationship, you no longer qualified to get PR through his application.

What is your status right now? Are you in Canada or outside of Canada? If inside of Canada, what is your status (e.g. work permit, something else)? Let us know. There may be other paths for you.

I would also like to know if I was supposed to get a letter in the mail that I was no longer in the application. Also is there a way I can look into this to see what really transpired?

No, you won't get a letter. Your ex was the primary applicant and is the person IRCC will communicate with. The primary applicant has the right to remove you from the application given you were no longer in a relationship.

I don't see any way for you to find out what happened since you aren't the primary applicant. However it seems pretty straight forward to me. Once the application was approved and it was time to issue the COPR, your ex notifed IRCC that you were no longer together and you were removed from the application. This is what should happen in these circumstances.

Thanks so much for explaining to me. I’m a refugee claimant waiting for my hearing.

Ah - got it. In that case you should continue with your refugee application.

If you want to discuss the status of your refugee application, you can join the discussions in the Asylum / Refugee section of the forum.

There is no way for you to get PR through your ex common law partner's application. You were correctly removed from that application since you were no longer together.
