Application for Canadian Citizenship - A Comprehensive Guide

hey guys,

I applied for my citizenship in July 2020 and I don't expect to receive any results soon (we all know why I guess).


I have recently been asked to give biometrics (fingerprint required). How long after this step will I be invited for a test? How is the timeframe from this step if anyone has a similar experience?

There's no standard timeframe, unfortunately. The timeline greatly varies between applicants. You can take a look at the 2020 spreadsheet in my signature.

If a passport was CANCELLED before it’s expiry date and before the eligibility period because I got a new passport with new profession in it , but it’s expiry date falls in eligibility period. Should it be included? Does cancelled passport considered valid ?

No. If the passport was cancelled before your eligibility period (irrespective of what the passport validity is), you don't have to submit that passport. I am in the same situation - My passport was cancelled about 4 months before the start of the eligibility date and so I did not include this with the application.

Hi @rajkamalmohanram thanks for the reply. I will elaborate on the passport question. I created my Express Entry profile in 2016 with a passport which was to expire in September 2017. I got my ITA in March 2017. Assuming that the process would take a bit of time, and to avoid the risk of an expired passport during the process, I got a new passport and explained in LOE (with a copy of old passport). The old passport falls within the 5year period for citizenship application. I have to submit both passports now. That is where the mismatch in signature issue comes up. Would there be any problem about it?

Regarding the 2nd question about multiple jobs, do we have a choice to not declare some of the jobs that we held?

1. I don't think why that should cause an issue. As long as the identity is verifiable and name, DOB & Gender are all the same on both passports, you should be fine. If you see the need, you can provide a letter of explanation telling them that you've changed your signature and that's why there is a difference in signatures between both the passports.

2. I would not recommend hiding anything from IRCC. Provide all the work experience truthfully.

Hi I am applying for my minor ,she is 17 years old ,my question can I send driver license and PR card as 2 Id documents as these Documents are not listed under minor examples ? The reason I am not using OHIB because the name is not complete on the card just first and last?

I would NOT recommend sending PR card as an identity document for a minor because it isn't explicitly listed in the instruction guide.

You can submit her driver's license and passport as proof of identity.

Shall I make another copy for biographical page as I already include the passport with the application? Thanks

For minors, I would suggest to send as many documents as you can. I send these:

PR card copies
Copies of biographical pages of passports (2 sets of copies)
Immunization report
School reports
Health card copies
Drivers License (if you have one)
