Hello,
I want to sponsor my parents. I have required family income (wife and myself) of last three years to sponsor them. But I am laid off from work this year because of Covid and do not have required income(2020) . But again, I have required income of last three years. Is it still possible to sponsor my parents? Will they (CIC) ask for this year income too? I know that I will get the job when everything will improve. Thank you.

How can I show proof of income to sponsor my parents and grandparents?
You must provide your Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for each of the three taxation years immediately preceding the date of your application.
There are two ways you can do this:

Do I have to show my income of 4th year too? ( applying year)? Or just only last three years?

It is right on the website. You must include 2020 so unfortunately you aren’t eligible. Also you have to meet LICO for four people (you, your wife, parents). If you have children, add them too.

“Because the program has opened later than usual this year, sponsors will be invited to apply near the end of the year so we expect to get applications in early 2021 (likely January and February). Because of this, we’ll assess sponsors on their income for tax years 2020, 2019 and 2018.

We know you may not get your 2020 Notice of Assessment (NOA) until after you apply. So, for the 2020 process, we’ll accept your application if you include your 2019 and 2018 NOAs along with it, and submit your 2020 NOA as soon as it’s available.”

If EI counts as an income, I will be eligible with 2020 income. Family of 4 with our parents will be required$ 49,106. We meet the LICO income requirement. Thanks.

EI is taxable and shows on line 150 of your tax return, so yes it counts as income.

Actually typically only ei special benefits (maternity, parental, sick leave) benefits can be counted and not regular benefits. However under a temporary public policy introduced because of the pandemic regular ei benefits can be used to meet the 2020 income requirements.

Hi guys. I just recently became a PR, so my income for 2019 and 2018 was from my job outside of Canada before I became a PR. Am i eligible?

No you need CanadIan Notice of Assessments through submission of Canadian taxes. Income outside Canada isn’t accepted. You can apply after filing taxes in Canada for three years so 2022.

Hi Guys

Do you think, the government will be lenient if I try my application this year?
Im planning to get my parents.
I meet the income requirement for both 2019 ($43,971) and 2020 ($44,283) but just short by $825 last 2018 $ ($39,554) Lol

Total number of people you’ll be responsible for202020192018
2 people$32,899$41,007$40,379

How much is the fee for the application?
Is it refundable?

Thanks!

If you are short, you don’t meet the requirements. People who are short by $100 are denied.

Thanks for the quick response. Will just try next year if I pass the requirement for year 2021.

Only the landing fee is refundable.

Do you plan to sponsor both of your parents? If so, you need to meet LICO for 3 people (not 2). This is assuming you are single with no children.

Assuming both of your parents are still alive and you are single + have no children, you need to meet LICO for 3 people. You must include yourself in the calculation.
