Hello mates,

I landed in May 2019 and left for India and returned back in September 2020. I do not have any employment here in Canada. Do I need to file taxes for those two years?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you in advance.

Depends on whether you had any family, finances, ties to Canada.

Whether you pay taxes or not, depends on your residency in Canada for tax purposes. Generally, you'll pay tax if the following applies:

Significant residential ties with Canada include:
Please determine your residency and based on that file/not-file taxes - https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/information-been-moved/determining-your-residency-status.html
Thank you.

Check with a tax consultant in Canada. I was told to file taxes for the years from which I became a PR, even if I didn't live or work in Canada. But I filed them after I moved back to Canada permanently for all the years since I became a PR.

You should still file your taxes in Canada even you don't have any income as long as you are on a work permit, student visa or PR. This tax filing will provide some Govt benefits.
