Hello guys,

I'm an engineering undergrad from India, I have a low percentage of 65% in my engineering with one back year to complete courses (but on my transcripts there is no mention of the subjects I failed), but I have IELTS of 8.5 and GMAT of 650. I am looking to go for Masters in Management or even MEng programs in Canada but all counselors and consultants tell me I cannot get accepted in ANY university in Canada. Is it really the case?

I don't want to go for a PG Diploma or consider Australia as it is too expensive. I have good extracurriculars and decent internships. I would request university suggestions according to you guys where I have a decent-good chance of acceptance given my profile.

Thank you for the help..

Visa will be 99% rejected if you go for MiM, reason : no work experience, no relevancy

If you can't even afford PGD then how are you supposed to finance MiM or MEng.

Attending PGD in colleges/Unis can be lucrative if it's reputed. Not all colleges in Canada are degree mills.

Disagree. Plenty of people in my university doing are MiM who have an engineering background. Reputation of university can often allow the VO to overlook the different field of study. Obviously, you need to explain why you're doing MiM in your SoP as well.

I understand candidates need little or no work experience to gain admission for MiM programs but from a visa standpoint I wouldn't risk it as I think work experience is an integral part of home ties, especially if one is applying from Asian countries.

Good grades & reputation of a university does allow the VO to overlook everything. I've seen it countless times especially in one case where the applicant didn't even submit a SOP yet got approved.

However, OP has decent grades and for this specific case I feel that way. Really wonder whether the VO will consider an engineering internship as a relevant qualification towards the proposed course.

Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. But just to clarify, I can afford PGD's, I can't afford Australia as it's too expensive. Canadian masters are way cheaper than Aus in most cases. Plus I have a diploma in French (B1), which I plan to make use of once I complete my degree.

About the visa rejection, I have some experience in management in the form of a pro-bono consulting project that I did for 5 months. And my minor specialization in college was Digital Marketing. Do you think this will have a positive effect on the visa app?

Thanks

UCalgary, uOttawa, Wilfried Laurier, Schulich, Carleton (if they have one)
Thanks a ton for this. I didn't even think uCalgary or Ottawa would be anywhere near my reach. But I'll apply to them. However, I have one question though. In a lot of cases, like Carleton or Ottawa, the MiM is supposed to be a research based degree. And I'm looking to find a job after the completion of my degree. There's not much info about this on the web, or too many people on LinkedIn I could find. In your experience, do people who do these research focused MiM's land jobs after graduation? Like obv not in the capacity of what an MBA lands you, but I'm just trying to figure out if most people do these masters as a pathway to their PhD's.
Thank you.

Advise not to mention "pro-bono consulting project" or much of sophisticated terms to the VO, obviously they can't understand such terms. Do watch the wordings to make it seem that the internship is related to management. Having minor specialization in Digital Marketing is a good thing as well. Be cautious as Canada doesn't encourage track changes, even students from prestigious Universities sometimes get refused.

Hope you go through these threads to get an idea :

Thank you

Those were just off the top of my head. I'm not saying you are guaranteed an admission, I'm saying that your GMAT is good enough that they might overlook your low GPA. Not many MiM students take GMAT so you will differentiate yourself.

Yeah, I understand. But offsetting my academics is what I'm looking for. I know the rest of my profile is great apart from the academics so I'll have an edge there. This is an incredible resource. Wow, thank you so much for this.
Can I just ask you 2 questions that have been really confusing me:
1. Should I retake GMAT for a 700+ for like the top unis? I would do it but it seems to me the higher GMAT for places like Ivey or Smith's isn't going to make a difference due to my GPA. What is your opinion on it? I can write it in the last week of Feb to still make most of their deadlines. Also, Since Desautels retail management is a brand new program, do you think I have a shot there/worth applying? I mean I know it's McGill but you know, brand new.

2. If I apply for an engineering course as well as management in the same uni, does that hamper my chances of getting accepted in either? Like I'm trying to sort of have a plan B if MiM's don't work out, but I'm unsure if doing this is the right thing. Would love your opinion on this as well.

Hope I'm not overstepping the favor, you've already been really helpful. Thanks a ton for that!

Understood. Thank you so much for this. I didn't perceive this as an issue going forward. But I will take the steps accordingly. Hopefully having family (dad's brother and his family, my first cousins) there would be an advantage as well.
