Backlogs Calculation

Hi sir,
I am interested in studying PG Diploma in canada. I did my Btech in computer engineering. But i have a doubt to clear regarding backlogs.
How are backlogs calculated in colleges? Is it no of attempts or no of subjects? Because i have only 10 papers i had lost but in attempts, it accounts to 30+ because of various issues like health, travel, and sometimes trying again.

I believe it is the number of attempts.
