Hi everyone, I want to sponsor my common-law partner, we have been living together for almost 2 years now. She is on the student visa and can get her Work visa/PR in 2 years. And also, I want to sponsor my mother. I am concerned if I sponsor one person, I won't be able to sponsor the other for the next 3 or 5 years as I think I understood from the CIC website. Can someone guide me on this? How long would I have to wait to sponsor my mother if I sponsor my girlfriend now to be my common-law partner?

We decided if it is 3-5 years wait, then we will sponsor the mother as she will be able to get PR after her studies too. Any guidance is appreciated.

You can sponsor both at the same time.

For your mother, you'll need to wait until you meet income requirements and also until you are selected as a sponsor (the program hasn't reopened this year yet).

The 3-5 years you're referring to is if you break up with you common law and want to sponsor another spouse/common law partner, you will have to wait for 3 years and if your common law partner wants to sponsor a spouse/common law, she will have to wait for 5 years.

Sponsorship for a common law partner and sponsorship for your parent are two totally different programs . One of which is on hold currently

Thank you for the information. Does she have to be in Canada all while long if I put the application for common-law in land sponsorship, now? Because she is planning to go to her home country for 3-4 months until January. Since it will be in early 6 months of the processing.

Others can comment as well but not advisable with an inland application to leave the coountry for more than a few weeks given IRCC could consider the inland application has been abandoned. An inland application offers the opportunity to get a spouse work permit but if that is not required and a spouse still wants to be able to travel then most people would go with the outland option even if living in Canada at the time.

Yes, she won't need OWP. She will continue her studies by the time PR comes. Outland seems more suitable for us, I guess. But in outland, they call for an interview in the home country, right? She will have to go to her home country in that case, which can be in the middle of the sem. We are concerned about that part only.

An interview is not guaranteed.
