What are everyone’s thoughts on how long the US/Canadian border will be closed to non-essential travel?

Is there any talks of something to help out families eventually that won’t involve the 2 week quarantine period?

Times are very difficult for families separated, but I understand why it needs to be done

If you are close family member, you can travel now.

There is no way to get around the 2-week quarantine.

Yes that’s the trouble. There is no way everyone can miss 2 weeks of work. We are like 20 minutes away from each other

Well, unfortunately, you can't skip the quarantine. Florida and California tried to skip those kind of measures and are getting 50,000+ cases per day.

Right now the restrictions are in place until end of July. IMO there is an excellent chance they will be extended further given the current situation in the U.S. But that's just my opinion.

I’m not asking to skip.

Then you have no problem with the two week quarantine - great! :)

I know it's a challenge. It won't go away until the US gets itself sorted.

I think you are taking this post wrong. I said I understand why the quarantine is in place. I was asking if anyone has heard of anything that might happen or be put in place for families that wouldn’t involve quarantine. I know the quarantine is in place until August 31 for anyone entering Canada as of now

Yeah, I'm probably taking it wrong. There is nothing in place to allow families to skip the quarantine and nothing is planned that I have heard. Many of the recent cases in BC relate to American family exposing Canadian family members to the virus, inside of the family quarantine bubble.

Anyone that skips the quarantine is an increased risk to the rest of the country, so there are only very few, very specific exemptions (mostly people leaving Canada right away, or on essential travel business shipping freight.)

There is nothing in place at this time and no such announcements have been made.

IMO - there won't be anything specific to families. They will just lift the quarantine at some point for everyone.

Hope that helps to answer the question.

My wife is convinced she will never see her parents again at this point

I think that's silly and over-reactionary to be perfectly frank. And this coming from someone who has an American husband and extensive close family members in the U.S. who I cannot visit in person right now either (and they cannot come here).

I think it will be a while until we can see them but certainly not forever. And I sadly think the two U.S. family weddings we were supposed to attend this fall / winter are not going to happen. But that's life. We are all part of something larger here that takes priority over personal interests.

She could see her parents if she quarantines for 2 weeks so agree that is an overreaction. Would anticipate it will be quite a while until quarantine is lifted. If anything border restrictions coukd get stricter. People on H1B working in non-essential jobs seem to be still crossing the border daily. Not sure why that still is the case.

I thought americans can still go through the border (using going to Alaska as loophole) and stopping on the way! Also, the meetup at the Peace Arch Park between the WA/BC border.

That is why US citizens are getting fines. They either aren't going to Alaska or stop and take obviois detours and don't stick to the highway directly to Alaska. Would add that 2 US citizens got charged $1000 each for not going straight to quarantine in Ontario.
