Hello everybody,

I hope this message finds you all well and healthy. I had a consultation regarding my immigration situation here in Canada, and was wondering if anyone would have some advice or is in a similar situation.

My study permit along with my passport is set to expire July 7th 2020 (I am a Spanish citizen studying in Canada). I have contacted the consulate of Spain in Montreal, but due to the global pandemic they are not receiving any passports from Spain, so it does not appear that I will be able to renew through them any time soon. On the other hand, flying back to Spain to renew my passport seems very risky, and I am afraid of not being allowed to enter Canada if I do so. My program of studies runs until the end of August, so I have thought about asking for a study permit extension before my passport expires so as to get implied status, but I am afraid of my application being outright rejected due to my expiring passport, losing my status as a student, and hence being unable to complete my study program.

I wanted to contact the IIRC about this matter, but their website says that no agents are currently taking calls due to the pandemic. I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions as to what to do in this situation.

Have you talked to your government? There must be an alternative arrangement they can provide maybe mail the passport somewhere. Also the situation might improve before then.

Thanks for your reply! I have spoken to the Spanish consulate in Montreal, and they told that they are not receiving any passports from Spain at the moment, but I will contact the embassy in Ottawa tomorrow and see what they suggest.
